Hello!

I can see that your blog is already enjoying some level of privacy, as I cannot access it! That's a good start. Here's a quick read-up from WP on Privacy Settings:

http://en.support.wordpress.com/settings/privacy-settings/

Depending on the size and computer literacy of your class, it might be wise to leave your blog public, but to disable search engine crawlers - that way your students can access it without signing up for WP, but you won't have strangers showing up.

If it's a small class, or if you have a graduate assistant to send all the invites for you, a fully private blog might be the way to go!

You could try with a new private post (which contains no private data, just some "lorem ipsum" text) just for testing. Then the people here could check if they can see that post.

Yesterday I accidentally published a private post (no private information but a standard bit of text I want to add to every post), because after I had written it and made it private, I updated it (and clicked updated). The private setting was gone and it was published. At least I think I have done it that way. I might have done something slightly different, it was late and I'm tired (still :P), but I think this is what I did.
I don't want to test again because I don't want to harrass my (7?) followers with (more) nonsense posts, so I can't check. But maybe you know if you did something similar?

ps: I noticed it was published because I subscribed with e-mail to my own blog, so I see what others see in their mailbox.

I changed it to password protected and the reason I'm not giving too much detail is because it's a personal post that I listed as private for a reason. The only reason I came to this forum was to figure out how to keep private things private.

I'm hoping maybe someone can explain why a post listed as private could be visible to anyone other than me and possibly list some steps to take to make sure certain posts stay hidden... because so far the "private" distinction doesn't seem to be keeping things private.

Apparently password protection seems to keep it hidden. Any other suggestions?

I't s just confusing to me-- the function of a 'private' distinction, in my mind, would be to keep that particular post hidden from others... why else would that option even be available? In this case someone was able to see a post I had listed as private, and that's a big deal to me because I thought it was hidden from the public.

I just had someone 'like' a private post on my blog, and I'm frankly quite shocked and upset that anyone could read something listed as PRIVATE. How do I make sure my private posts stay hidden from other people? Do I have to password protect each one? Why is there even an option for privacy when people can actually read posts listed as private? I'm also quite frustrated that there is no direct 'contact us' link and that my only option here for help is through the forum... hopefully I get some answers, otherwise I'm making a new blog with a site that can actually protect users privacy. Any advice at all is much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

4. Try enabling HTTPS: http://en.support.wordpress.com/https/

Please let us know how each step goes for you.

Thanks for the replies. I use the default Tor browser, which is a modified version of Firefox ESR - https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/organizations/ - which is currently at version 17. I tested again using the latest version as of today (17.0.5) and still no dice :(

I'd humbly suggest testing Firefox ESR compatibility, since it's intended to be used by large organizations looking for browser stability. If that succeeds, then there's obviously a Tor-specific issue happening. Any suggestions on what info I could provide to help track it down?
