I know that I can force this using the html, but is there any way to keep double spaces after periods when pasting in content from an editor such as word, notepad, etc?

In the title of the post I saw currently on your page (31 May 2011), the single quotation marks are displaying correctly in the header, and are correct, as well in the final quotation of that post, but then I see that you have others in that same post that are displaying that strange behavior.

Are you using Word and cutting and pasting? Because when I cut and pasted your text into my visual editor, the problem remained. It looked "normal" in html mode only because there are no "smart quotes" in the html mode, and only by previewing it or switching to the visual editor can you see whether it's a smart quote (inverted commas) or the plain-text sort of straight up-and-down mark. I ask because I was able to eliminate the problem both in the Coraline theme and in Quentin quite simply. Cutting and pasting from Word (or similar program) can sometimes cause formatting problems.

I successfully corrected the problem by deleting each of the single quotation marks (i.e., inverted commas) and retyping them. Voila! When previewed, they appeared to curve in the correct way.

I've noticed sometimes with some fonts on one of my blogs, if there is a character with an accent mark over it, a closing quotation mark doesn't appear properly, but I "solve" that by using the "insert symbol" feature. So if simply going back and editing them in visual editor doesn't work for you, you could do that, although it's a pain.

I hope that some of this may have been helpful!

Hi, I've had a issue for a while which is beginning to get on my nerves: in the body of my posts, inverted commas around a phrase (i.e. when I'm quoting someone - not blockquote) do not seem to work properly. The first one is fine (inverted) but the second, which ought to look like an apostrophe, is also inverted, which is wrong and is jarring to look at when reading. This isn't a problem in the post titles. Does anyone else get this? I'm using the Coraline theme, if it matters.

I'm quite torn on this. On one hand, I do think that each of us settles into our own style of writing once we've been doing it for a while. On the other hand, there are always going to be people who are sticklers for things done properly - and in some peoples' opinions, over-enthusiastic punctuation might not be entirely proper (that's not a criticism of either side; I have a lot of punctuation quirks myself but am really hot on particular things too).

I do wonder whether you've considered setting up two separate blogs; one for your stories and one for the other things. If the two are very different in their style and content, you might find that you attract two completely different sets of readers.

I popped over to read a couple of your posts, wc. I'm sorry you had an unpleasant interchange with an impolite critic. I generally agree with what cestie said. However, I also think some of your punctuation enthusiasms reduce their effectiveness for readers. There's a cap on exclamation points for several reasons. If you use more than one, it does not mean you are more happy or excited. It means you are writing advertising copy. Extra exclamations in English are typically used in sales, and in spam, and most people don't like spam. You can use more of them for comic effect, as in parodies, but one really is the limit even when you are trying to write like you speak. You can use all-caps or put single words in bold face instead, or even employ italics, or underlining.

I hope you find success and fulfillment as a writer. I have great respect for teachers.

My blog falls into two categories, erotic story and simply, "others".

I had one women read a post and make a comment to me about what she did not like about my blog, offering suggestions and what not in a constructive manner, not to be negative. And it has been bugging me a little. When it comes to my actual stories, I use proper punctuation and follow almost all those grammar rules that I can. But when it comes to my "other" topics, I write as I speak. I use lots of pauses when I speak, so have many "..." and I am usually in a happy mood so use quite a bit of "!!!" to show that as well.

So my question to you all, how do you feel about people who choose to write how they speak with excessive punctuation in their blogs???

This is in reference to a self-hosted blog.

If I manually type out a title/headline which happens to contain an apostrophe, WordPress properly strips out the apostrophe and all is good.

If; however, I copy and paste the title (say if I'm cross-posting my content from another blog), the URL generated will contain the apostrophe. I then have to manually edit the URL to remove it, so that the URL can be promoted on Buzz, Digg, etc.

Is there any fix or plug-in available that will strip apostrophes and other punctuation out of URLs automatically, so that I don't have to manually go back in and fix them?

My permalink structure is custom with: %postname%.

Thanks much.

Wordwatch is all about grammar, punctuation and writing well. Yes, I know it sounds boring, but it’s not too bad once you get there.
