I have noticed that usually the opening quote mark gets screwed up if it is not immediately preceded by a space. In other words:

non- "big names"

renders as:

non- ”big names”

You notice that the "opening" quote mark is incorrectly rendered as a closing quote mark. The solution is to span the space thusly:

<span style="margin-left:-.35em;"> </span>

When I am coding this is a CSS file, I call the class ".reverse" (appropriately enough). This little trick can actually be used to accomplish to things:

First, as in the sample above (you can see this live at < http://recommend1959.wordpress.com/2011/10/30/howard-smith-totally-committed/ >, paragraph 5) this allows you to insert a space for the purposes of coding while hiding it visually to the reader. This can be used to allow for a line wrap in a long text string which would not otherwise wrap and might extend beyond the bounds of a container.

Second, it can be used to prevent a line wrap by replacing the standard space with a non-breaking space. This will allow you to prevent a line wrap a hyphenated word that might otherwise wrap.

I usually prep the text and copy it in a bare bones editor called MyTexts or FileMaker Pro depending on the last side that I edited it. I just paste it into the New Post window for the text (not html). The previews look fine on the web but the email notification introduces strange characters. If you want to see subscribe and you will get the next post. Of course I am reading these on a Mac. Does that have something to do with it? I will check the Unicode setting.

In any case, thanks for caring and answering.

Sheesh, sorry I didn't read through completely.

If you are going to use textedit on the Mac, go into preferences and set it for plain text only, not the Rich text. Even then I've had issues with strange code coming in when pasting from textedit.

Also go to preferences in textedit, click on the "open and save" tab and down at the bottom, make sure that "encoding" is set to Unicode (UTF-8)

As far as the editor is concerned, are you copying and pasting from another source such as the web or possibly from a word processing application such as MS Word or something?

The reason I'm asking is I'm seeing something strange at the beginning of each paragraph on your blog,

<p style="clear: both;">

That isn't something that the editor puts in.

Can anyone tell me why the email notification changes the characters (especially quotation marks) to a cryptic string? I preview my post and they do not appear there nor on the web page. I have subscribers asking why they have trouble reading the emails? I typically create the text in an application (Macintosh) and paste the formatted text to the New Post box as rich text. The same thing happens when I use a blogging editor to post.

Okay. That IS a WordPress.com blog alright :-)

Does this help?
http://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/getting-quotation-marks-to-display-properly-in-posts?replies=15

By the way, this does not depend on the theme, but on the visual editor, which has been acting weird lately...

I find from time to time I have problems with smart quotation marks: Typically the intended closing quote mark shows up backwards (looking like the one that comes at the start of a quotation). I don't see this until I publish, as the text editor shows them as straight quote marks. And I can't seem to fix it. Anyone else have this problem and know what I might be able to do about it?

I'm using the Coraline theme.
