I have successfully moved a blog from WordPress.com to WordPress.org and years later moved it back to WordPress.com and I never lost a single subscriber. I'm still using Feedburner and not wordpress subscriptions.

If you do plan to set up a WordPress.org in the future you can install and activate the JetPack plugin on it. Then you can get WordPress.com Staff to transfer your wordpress.com email subscribers to it for you.

But my great, great, great aunt Lucy says "I'm gonna have fish an' chips if I have to jump overboard to catch the blighter myself, what kind of ship is the Titanic anyway to run out of yesterday's newspaper?.....what was that grinding noise? why are we stopped? She is now Saint Lucy patron saint of cod an' chips and it all goes to show if you are really determined you CAN succeed all you need is an iceberg lettuce to go with it oh and a pinch of salt.

We are on a shared platform. This means that changes you would make would affect everybody.

There are other options for inserting a hit counter though. Sitemeter can work as a text widget and there are one or two others that will work.

The FAQ will have more information as will doing a search for "Sitemeter".
