I recently transferred my blog from WP.org to .com. When it was self-hosted, I had multiple authors contributing to the site and I thought that they had all been transferred correctly when I imported the content.

Unfortunately, this is not the case. I have invited the users to become authors on WP.com but I have one big problem that I can't fix.

All their content has been attributed to me! This was not the intention of the move and I want to reassign the posts to their original authors but I can't find a way of doing that.

I read on a forum post that changing the theme may hide the author so that at least posts wouldn't display my author bio on articles I didn't write but:
1. I like the feature and it works well for correctly attributed posts as a link back to the author's main blog
2. I can't find a suitable theme that doesn't show author details.

I need to be able to change the author name, not hide mine, so is there a way of doing this short of asking the authors to delete and repost (which will probably put them off using the site altogether)?

Yes.

Would my supplier be able to embed my blog to my new website also?

Technically no. If that's what you want, you want them to install WordPress.org software and then you export your blog from here and import it over there. Set this WP.com blog to Private. Otherwise, they can presumably put it in an iframe or just link to it from a tab in the header.

I've acquired a domain name through wordpress and I've set up my blog using this domain name (say, myname.com).
I've just had an outside vendor create a new website for me and would like to use this domain name (myname.com) as the address of my new site. It will be hosted elsewhere. Will need to change to the NameServers. That I know...

Blogs belong to those who registered them. There is no expiration date on blogs unused or otherwise. If you can make contact on your own then there is a means of a consenting blog owner to transfer the blog to another username account. http://en.support.wordpress.com/moving-a-blog/#transferring-your-blog-to-another-user-or-account In the case that there is no contact information Staff will not breach the privacy policy and provide you with an email address.

You can register anothr blog http://en.support.wordpress.com/register-a-blog/
Or you can register a domain via a domain mapping upgrade and it will not matter what the underlying .wordpress.com address is.

It's a bad policy without some sort of statute of limitations.

I like the no statue of limitations - I specifically set up a history blog here because it should live on for a long time

Does anybody else think this is a good idea? We're not talking a few months, we're talking 6 years with no posts, no replies, nothing. It's a bad policy without some sort of statute of limitations.

The policy isn't going to be changed. Usually I suggest just registering a whatever.wordpress.com URL and then buying a Custom Domain.

Why not? Who does that benefit? I want the policy changed that if you don't post for six years or some other reasonably long timeframe your URL is subject to reassignment. This way a very generic URL can be used productively instead of sitting idle. It helps WordPress and it helps me promote my blog.

I was also asking for other ideas on what else I might do - it doesn't look like you have any.

What is it you are actually asking? You know you can't have the URL, you've contacted the blog owner, you've contacted support, you don't want your own hosted name, so what is you want? The URL you want cannot be taken from the other person and given to you, just because they are not using it.

I want a wordpress URL that has not been posted to since 2006. I left a message but my guess is the poster isn't even checking anymore.

I contacted support and they were great about responding, but said too bad, dead URLs can't be retired or reassigned.

I can have my own hosted name have a wordpress URL underneath, but I don't like this solution, I'm happy with the [free] wordpress URL.

Any ideas on how to proceed?

I’m sorry, but we do not reuse or reassign blog names on WordPress.com. If the blog owner does not respond your request, you will need to select a different name for your WordPress.com blog. Keep in mind we also offer an upgrade for custom domain names and you can use any WordPress.com blog URL underneath a custom domain.

Hi,

I would REALLY like to use the following domain for my blog:

Someone set up this blog 4 years ago (Sept 2007) and has done nothing with it.
I've tried to contact them about a transfer through commenting but have not had a response as yet.

Wondering if there is anything you guys can do to help?

If you like, you can attempt to contact the owner of that blog and ask them if they would like to transfer it to you. You can do this by either leaving them a message using a contact form if it exists, or leaving a comment on an existing page or post requesting they contact you.

If you are able to reach the blog owner and they are willing to transfer the blog to you, here are the instructions they can use to do that.

If they do not respond or refuse the transfer, you will need to select a different name for your WordPress.com blog.

Keep in mind we also offer an upgrade for custom domain names and you can use any WordPress.com blog URL underneath a custom domain.

I want to create a blog with the name of http://www.splashdesigns.wordpress.com or http://www.splashgraphics.wordpress.com and its already used by someone but nobody uses it since it has NO content at all which makes me angry because people make websites and they don't use it when It can be more than useful to other people who would really use it and care about it, I would like to know if I can have that address since nobody uses it, I even wanted to use the name of splash-designs.wordpress.com but wordpress only allows lowercases and numbers, thanks for the help hope to hear soon!
