However... my main difficulty remains: I still see an empty box (pale blue with a dark blue square bullet point inside it) just below the 'Recent Posts' heading, and then below that, a separate pale blue box with the list of recent posts.

The image is uploaded to a different site, so maybe the site was temporarily down, or you have a connection problem, or your browser can't display it correctly because the sidebar displays a downsized version. This is why it's not good practice to use the URLs of images stored elsewhere. Copy the image to your computer, use an image editing application to downsize it to the pixel width that's right for your sidebar (204px), upload it to your blog via Media > Add New, click Edit, copy the File URL from the Save module, use that URL in the widget.

Is there any way I can get rid of the empty box (with blue square bullet point in it) showing beneath the widget heading 'Recent Posts' on my blog? None of the other widget headings have this empty box beneath them. I've tried deleting the widget and then putting it back, but the empty box returned with it.

ie. If I try to ask for '65 posts to show', it keeps reverting back to 50 posts to show.

You cannot set the Recent Posts widget to display more than 50 recent posts. That is the limit.

Just to be clear about this I have 7 links displaying in my Recent Posts widget. I have a page with the Archives shortcode on it that displays links to all of my published posts http://onecoolsitebloggingtips.com/sitemap-2/ In addition I have two other static pages that are index pages which I manually update:
