In your Dashboard view, on the upper right corner, under the “[name]” is a tab labeled “Screen Options.” Click it. Here is a list o f the screens where the modules can be hidden:
Posts – Post Tags, Categories, Excerpt, Send Trackbacks, Discussion, Comments, Post Slug, Post Author, Post Revisions
Pages – Page Attributes, Recommendations, Featured Image, Discussion, Comments, Slug, Author, Revisions
Select those and return to your Dashboard.

Make sure you select Select Post Revisions and Page Revisions those and return to your Dashboard. Then close the tab.

On the left toolbar, click on either “Pages” or “Posts” depending on what type of document are you are trying to restore.

You can look the last autosave for Posts » Post Revisions
You can look in the last autosave for Pages » Page Revisions

I'm desperate to get hold of the draft saved before this - can I do this? I read that there is supposed to be something called "page revisions", but that doesnt show on my screen..

Please go to screen options and enable full accesibility mode. You want to be sure that the Posts and Pages modules are not hidden so your can access Post Revisons.

Ever since the latest WP updates, some users have been reporting issues with drafts. Safer method while preparing a new post: set it to privately published instead of draft.

This had happened earlier today when I did a previous post but all of a sudden it returned when I removed the added picture. It is NOT working this time and I'm pretty upset since I was almost finished.
I had made sure to save the draft because I was afraid of it disappearing. Is there anyway to get it back?
