Hi all. The question about recycling the blog names comes up a lot, and the answer is that blog URLs are not recycled/reassigned.

That information can be found under Tools > Delete Blog, if you select the option "Free up the blog name so that somebody else can use" it, the following notice comes up: "At this time, there is no way to free up a blog name. Once you've registered a name, it's yours. If you're trying to free it up so that someone else can use it, you might want to try moving a blog to another user instead."

The option is there because the question comes up a lot, and if a user selects that option, they see the answer immediately.

Let me know if you have any more questions about this or have suggestions about how to make that message clearer.

I find the date included in each post’s URL undesirable for the following reasons:

1. It makes the URL impossible to remember (for me and visitors)
2. It makes the URL too long to type it in so it always needs to be copied
3. It makes the URL too long for the important part (title) too appear when pasted in places like Twitter
4. If I update a post, I want it to appear as the latest but I also want links to the first version to lead to the updated version, which would be a given if the URL remained the same.
5. Depending on the post’s topic, it really doesn’t matter to the visitor when it was created, it puts too much emphasis on the date.
6. It makes the URL ugly and noisy. To the stereotypical grandmother the URL as a whole would like random computer stuff, not worth wasting attention on.
7. Add yours if you have more reasons.

I know there are several ways to remove the date from the URLs. My questions are:

Q1. What is the least problematic way to do it in terms of compatibility with other services?
Q2. Why should I not do it? Does anyone or anything require the dates in the URLs? Is there an SEO advantage?
Q3. With all the disadvantages, why is it the standard?

If you delete a blog the URL is gone forever and cannot be recycled.
http://en.support.wordpress.com/recycling-blog-names/

If you wish to post an email address safely then this post contains several ways to do that found here http://onecoolsitebloggingtips.com/2007/10/18/eluding-email-address-spam-bots/ I recommend posting a contact form on the blog instead. http://en.support.wordpress.com/contact-form/

If you do get an email message via the contact form that another blogger would like to takeover over the blog then these are the instruction for the transfer. Note that Staff are required as the original Admin cannot be removed without their help.
http://en.support.wordpress.com/moving-a-blog/#transferring-your-blog-to-another-user-or-account

Just set the only post on the blog so that it says "This blog is available" and use a contact form that links to your email or use an email obscurer (so spammers don't pick up the email) and put your email address in.
