Sorry about that, I misunderstood your question! You should be able to get rid of the default menu bar by creating a custom menu, removing all of the links from the menu, and setting it as the Primary Menu for your blog. If the custom menu does not have any links in it, the menu should be removed from your blog.

Can you give that a try and see if it works for you? Let me know if you have any questions!

Hello there,

Thanks for the answer, but it seems I failed to make my question clear. I do not want to use any menus in my blog and I cannot get rid of the default menu bar (Home/About) above my header. Is there a way to remove them? I mean the whole menu bar above the header?

Hi there,

It looks like you haven't created a custom menu yet. When you first go to Appearance > Menus in your dashboard, you will see the links for your default menu listed there. You can get started with your first custom menu by giving your menu a name and clicking the "Create Menu" button. After that, you can make changes to your menu and save it.

We have additional instructions for creating custom menus one this page: Custom Menus

If you have any questions about this, please let me know!

I am at a lost. I followed your directions, Sacred Path. I cannot find any Save button when I go to create menu. I went to screen options at the top and clicked everything. Back on the main screen everything on the left is grayed out. When I click on create menu, at the top of the box the word Menu is highlighted with pink shading. I have even logged out and logged back in. I have gone to the link above and studied menus. It shows a list with bars, and it says to click the down arrow to the right, and once expanded, click to remove. I don't see any of that. The theme I am using is Neutra.

Thank you for your help. I thought I wanted a menu at the top, but now I've change my mind because it looks ugly and overlaps a good deal of the rest of every page ... if that is what it will look like. I would rather, instead, use my pages widget in the right sidebar for navigation. Currently this blog is password protected and private. Actually, I don't know how all that horsey type that is a menu got there. I must have made a mistake, but I don't know what it was. When I go to Appearance > Menu, there is nothing there anymore that allows me to delete the menu.

Hi,

You can customize the navigation menu to your liking by using the Custom Menus feature. You can access this feature at Appearance > Menus in your dashboard.

http://en.support.wordpress.com/menus/

If you want to remove the blue menu bar altogether, simply create a menu that doesn't contain any links, and assign it to the navigation area under Theme Locations on the Appearance > Menus page.
