If you write the post as a private one why doesn't it disappear?

Check the Revisions module for a previously saved version. If you're not seeing the Revisions module while on the post editor screen, click Screen Options (top right) to activate it.
For future posts better avoid using drafts: write a couple of lines, turn the visibility to private and publish the post, keep editing and updating, turn to public when finished.

The text of my post was completely erased after I had saved the draft. The title / tags / everything else remains as is, but the actual blog entry is completely gone. I thought it was my fault the first time, but since it happened twice, on the same post, I'm curious as to why that would happen.

If it matters, I was using a very recently updated version of Firefox. Thank you!

The support documentation is all found at the Support link http://en.support.wordpress.com which is also on the bottom of your Admin page. The searchbox there provides results from the support documentation and from fourm threads. I've been here almost 6 years and it's rare that a question is asked that has not been previously asked and answered.

Ever since the latest WP updates, some users have been reporting issues with drafts. Safer method while preparing a new post: set it to privately published instead of draft.

This had happened earlier today when I did a previous post but all of a sudden it returned when I removed the added picture. You are correct. When you aren't logged in to your blog the autosave is not operational.

Unfortunatelly I was not able to restore the post. If you think, impossible! then this is what happened:

I was not logged in anymore as I wrote it, which I didn't notice. When I klicked preview I was referred to a new tab to log in, which I did, everything disappeared, I was shocked. Then I went back to the old tab, saw everything again, relieved. So all good now, I thought, pressed publish, it loaded an whooom, error message. Ever since my post is gone...

Oh how I regret that I didn't press "select all + copy" just to be sure!

I also wonder why it was autosaving or where to... But since I wasn't logged in, I guess the save was not associated with my blog.

But as I said, thanks so much for the help anyway, now I can be sure that I have checked everything before giving up ; )

Then you can try to restore the part of the posted you created while being logged in > Recovering a lost blog post or page
