Hi, I've looked for this all over the forums and support but can't find an answer. On my Blog I have two pages ( and wish to put up some more pages going forward).

In both the "About ScreenPens" and "Digital Resources" pages I have checked off (ie enabled) "comments" in the Dashboard Edit screen. The "Leave a Reply" box appears on the "Digital Resources" Page but DOES NOT appear on the "About ScreenPens" page. Is there some restriction on having "Leave a Reply" boxes on multiple pages? Is this just a bug or restriction in the Theme I'm using? (theme is "Digg 3" by WP Designer.

Please advise... this is quite frustrating.

IF a blog is marked Mature:
- it does not appear in sitewide tags
- it does not appear in search
- it does not appear in Blogs of the Day
- it does not appear in any 'Next blog' feature.

As for what is offensive, language generally isn't. I think there are a couple of blogs markd Mature because of language but they tend to use all the swear words very freely. So you have to work hard to get that one.

I recall reading somewhere that wordpress might stop submitting blogs with offensive content to search engines. Or that wordpress would somehow restrict blogs consdiered offensive. I now cannot find any reference to this.

Is this true - will wordpress place any restriction on blogs deemed offensive?

If so, what might be deemed offensive?

A recent entry on my blog contained the sentence "Twee nonsense sung by an annoying twit". What I originally posted was "Twee nonsense sung by an annoying tw*t". The asterix is probably a perochial affectation that may be lost on people not from the UK. This line appeared on the google search so I hastily changed "tw*t" to "twit". I would much prefer to keep "tw*t" but do not want any restrictions placed on my blog for the sake of an i.

Is there the remotest possibility that wordpress would restrict a blog that contained the line "Twee nonsense sung by an annoying tw*t"?

Darko:

We don't sit around scheming about which features we can withhold today. There are good reasons plugins aren't supported. WordPress.com uses a distributed architecture. Any code that runs on a single blog has access to every other blog. A single buggy or malicious plugin would take down 2 million blogs in seconds. Javascript is a similar situation.

We regularly release new features, and have many more on the way.

WordPress is available for download if you'd like to run it yourself without those restrictions.

You are getting free web hosting. That means you have to accept some restrictions.

WordPress is fairly easy to install on your own server or hosting services. You will, however have to pay for the hosting (Unless you have a cousin with a server farm....).

I find the occasional annoyances a fair trade off for free hosting, and relatively reliable up time.
Your choice may be different.

One of the things the original post requests is that WordPress "at least let people run their own services." WordPress offers precisely this. You can download WordPress from wordpress.org and run your own blog.
Or, if by service, you mean a site where multiple people can blog, there's WordPress Multi-User.
I too wish that there were fewer restrictions at WordPress.com. But there's a lot more to WordPress than the .com service.

This is really starting to piss me off. You guys have a great project going on here, with lots of potentials, and you are pretty much killing it with your own hands.
What i'm talking about here, is the amount of restrictions that WP.com has. No plugins, no file editing, no Adsense, no Analytics...
Don't get me wrong here, i love wordpress and love all what it stands for and that's why i left blogger to come here. Hell, wordpress is one of the first application that made me fall in love with PHP/mysql.
I understand the way you're service works and the reasons why you're not offering these services, but they're no excuse, if you guys can offer people 3 GB worth of space, then you are pretty much able to have every blogger run his own copy. And have the resources to at least let people run their own services.
Again, i'm saying this not because i hate WP, but because i like it and think that you have the ability and power to grow but you're just taking too damn slow

Hi there,

one of the most anoying things in WP 2 are an missing out-of-the-box role editor (there is an plugin, but it is not perfect at all because of many weaknesses in the WP2 role/capabilitiy system - e.g. some capabilities are bound to a specific named role and not to the capability itself) - but much more i miss a finer control over the capabilities.

I spend lots of time to find plugins for limiting categories or pages but i was not satisfied at all because (for example) "restrict pages" from Owen Winkler does not disable the creation of new pages - and that is not possible without modifying the code of a WP 2 admin component (page-new.php) because WP2 thinks that "edit" capabilities are also "create" capabilities - not really useful.

A small hack for this (which works fine with WP 2.0.4) follows (it is an adaption of Owen Winklers "restrict_pages.php"):

In "page-new.php" you have to modify the line that looks like:

if ( current_user_can('edit_pages') ) {

into

if ( current_user_can('create_pages') ) {

then you have to add the following script to your plugin folder (it should have the name "restrict_create_pages.php":
<?php
/*
Plugin Name: Restrict Page Creation
Description: Restricts users from creating Pages unless they have create pages capability
Version: 0.1
Author: Axel Napolitano
Author URI: http://www.pro-rauchfrei.de
Plugin URI:
*/

class Restrict_Create_Pages
{
function Restrict_Create_Pages()
{
add_filter('user_has_cap', array(&$this, 'user_has_cap'), 10, 3);
Warning

Any user (also the admin-user) without the "create_pages" capability will loose the ability to create new pages. In case of an accident, you can safely rename or delete the plugin from your plugins folder to disable its functionality. It is best used with the installed role editor from Owen Winkler.

Suggestion and Idea:

Extend the capability system. Add the capabilities "create" and "delete" to allow a finer control if neccessary.

Thanks!

WordPress - yes but not currectly with the setup we have here at WP.com. (We run different software here called WordPress MultiUser)

This has been a rumored feature planned for the future and hooks for it appear in the source code but nothing has been offically announced. Only method we would have here would be to suggest to you to (un)check the box that says if you want your blog to appear in search engines and ask to have no one link to it elsewhere.

Either that or grab a copy of the WordPress software and host it elsewhere where you can password protect your site.

I know this may sound a bit counter-intuitive when talking about blogs but...if I wanted to create a blog that served a small, restricted community (like a class) and wanted to restrict access only to approved members, is that possible with WordPress?

Thanks in advance
