There is no FTP access to free hosted WordPress.com blogs and we cannot install any plugins to disable right click. I believe Duotone and monotone are the only themes with this feature.

That being said, disabling right-click is a useless exercise that creates a false sense of security as anyone can defeat it in seconds flat. You are far better served by watermarking your images. See

Is there no way to prevent people from accessing the right click menu if they click on a photo on my blog?

It is so easy to bypass that sort of thing, or simply do a screen capture that it can be defeated in seconds flat and the instructions for defeating it are posted all over the web. Bottom line: If you do not want your images to be stolen then do not put them on the internet.

Doesn't work anyways. At most, it's a minor irritant. I haven't met an image on the web yet that I couldn't copy one way or another.

The only way to prevent copying from the web is not to post on the web.

image right-click-protect feature - Don't see that WP offers this? I have read this article http://en.support.wordpress.com/prevent-content-theft/ but don't understand why WP, like Flickr and Crevado and Smugmug for example, does not offer this. ( It would also be nice if WP provides this when posting Flickr pics, that they would link to a Flickr stream but not allowed to be downloaded.) I would like to post direct from WordPress without using Flickr. Thank you!!

Can I inactivate the 'right click' function on an image in a webpage, to stop people copying images to their computer. I only want images to be viewed, not copied, as copyright exists on many of them. Any help would be appreciated. Many thanks

They didn't add that feature to the themes. The way those two themes are designed, if you click on the right hand side of the pic, it goes to the next picture. If you click on the left, to the previous. So you can't right-click on any but the left hand side of the very newest picture. It's an accident.

I believe that only the Duotone and Monotone themes have the ability to disable right click. That being said, I want you to know that using it creates a false sense of security. It takes no skill at all to search the internet and defeat it in seconds flat. I know this because I've done it to prove it to myself.

WordPress.COM could always license the technology from Plagium or someplace and make it a paid upgrade for a blog for a nominal fee - then WordPress.COM looks like it is doing something and the Plagium or whoever gets some more money - the configuration could be to exclude the blog it is licensed to from being listed in the results - then have the software crawl on a regular basis ( every 2 to 4 weeks maybe )

But Copyscape and Plagium do something worth doing.

Even though neither of them are promising to stop copy and paste.

And being in someone's cache is not stealing or publishing.

And, yes, the conversation has been going on longer than ten years -- which makes it weird that no one has done anything yet.

This same conversation has been going on for at least 10 years that I know of. It was discussed on forums on several sites back around '00 or '01. Despite all of the other advances in the web since then, no one has come up with an effective way to stop C&P, nor do I expect they ever will. Probably because it would cause so many other problems.

It goes right to the core of how the web works and how content is displayed in browsers.

...except I'm not suggesting a 'spaceball.gif' option that Flikr uses, or whatever Blogger uses, both of which can be beat with a simple click. I'm suggesting something where, if someone publishes a few hundred words in the identical order I just published, maybe I could get a notice emailed to me so I can take a look. Like a proactive Copyscape.

Thanks Johnny this is a much better response than dont put it on the internet, as the purpose is sharing the content but not having someone else claiming its there work . I think a combination of Johnnytesting upgrade suggestions (as done on blogger) and timethiefs copyright protection suggestions is a good answer.

Thanks for the link TT... but there's the question, why can't the blogging platforms do the same? Just incorporate -- or licence -- some of those features, and give us a reasonable shot at protecting the work we provide for them to put ads around.

The last time I asked Matt about how many people at WP were working on something like this he joked that there were 42. But wanting something like Plagium or Copyscape incorporated into WP / Blogger / Whatever really doesn't seem that weird to me...

...okay, so try finding the copyright law for the country you live in... golly jee wiz, I'm sure even the Philippines has one.
