Been blogging for a year. For the first six months my stats showed a decent number of visitors via search terms. Then they suddenly fell away. I promptly verified my site on Google Webmaster, and regularly update submissions of my url's, which seem to be indexed. All looks well at that end, but I still seem to be invisible on Google. How come I've fallen off the bottom of their pages? If I test by putting in a search term that's very specific indeed, my pages come up. But short of that, zero. Is this a common experience? Are there any fixes? Or is it one of life's imponderables?

Well,

Just adding my two cents to the discussion... I feel that ozark is right. Lately WordPress suffers from weird behaviour. Every now and then it is slow at browsing, editing, can't find the pic-hosts, etc.

And one other thing I think is really annoying, which has to do with the way activating themes work... A new theme should inherit settings in my opinion.

Sorry to hear about your experience. You are right that staff is doing a lot of things we volunteers can't see, and that can mean some odd things happen.

Occasionally there will be a glitch, such as getting logged out (we don't get notified before being automatically logged out) and strange things happen when updating. But I always copy-all before pressing the update button.

One suggestion I'd make with adding pictures is to add your captions last—after you write the rest of your post: if you use only the Visual Editor sometimes the cursor places itself within the image code tags and that will certainly mess up your image placement. A similar problem can arise when you use the more-tag.

Have you tried using an offline editor such as Windows Live Writer or Ecto?

I looked at your blog, and your posts are listed in global tags, so people are able to search for things you (tag and) write about.

I have been blogging here since '08 and have set up 5 blogs for myself, my businesses and friends, Ive brough to the site. I've been a passionate supporter of this project.

But is it just me or is the basics being missed, and the stability of the system being compromised. I'm not an HTML or CSS expert, I'm a content guy, I leave the other stuff to the experts. I just want the platform to handle the content

1 The autosave feature supposed to take a snapshot every 2 minutes is obviously shot. I spent a hour this morning writing all the details for our fishing report http://ozarkflyfisherjournal.wordpress.com/2011/08/04/fishing-report-8-3-2011/. I scheduled the publish time, and went off on more work, when I checked back I found that nothing had published after the click through point. Wasn't the first time either. So I go to the post revisions _ only one autosave between 4.11 and 7.17am. So all that work blown. This is not the first time in recent months. I've lost stuff on update, Ive lost stuff when I'm scheduling, particularly youtube and vimeo videos, which I end up haveing to HTML post as the video posting popuff seems to be screwed too

Even better my subscribers have now received our fishing report which looks half done, so I look like an idiot.

2. The Search function is in the crapper. We have almost 1200 posts _ try searching anything, normally nothing found.

3. I'm having problems posting images. Better than 70% of the time I end up not being able to use the Image edit box, so have to resize images by mouse

4. Support hasn't been able to even provide a reasonable answer. In relation to 3 I'm supposed to take a screenshot _ handy when I click on the image editor and nothing shows up.

I've loved WordPress, but quite simply having taken over a new business and working mucho hours I can't afford the time its taking to get anything done and achieved. I have thought of going to WordPress.org if its more stable but the experiences here aren't giving me a great deal of confidence.

Is this crap happening to anyone else?

There seems to be more and more features being built in, but quite honestly its pointless if it becomes a PIA to get any of the basics like posting some text, a couple of photos and some video.

I was blogging about bookstores and books and the recommendations of Zemanta also included pictures of books allowed to be read in guantanomo bay; I just was a bit surprised because I was hoping to have more coverage on bookstores and libraries not on prisons — was it listed because it was a free wiki image? I had to define the search again for more helpful results as the automatic search did not give me many — so, I was curious of the functionalities of the widget.

I don't see any link mix-up. Googling for "pantalones solola" doesn't lead to the unrelated article, it leads to this: buyathread.wordpress.com/page/2/ (the second page of your blog, which includes the right article).

With that google search, you're competing against hundreds of webpages that simply include those two words. Your blog front has a Google rank of 4, your second page a rank of 2, while the article alone has no rank, so Google p.1 fetches the blog page instead of the individual post (as well as this, mind you: en.wordpress.com/tag/guatemalan-ikat/ ). If you narrow it down to "ikat-striped pantalones solola", Google fetches your blog page and the right article below it.

I have a lot of postings saved on my computer that are going to my blog and I'm currently writing a few more.
Thanks again for everyone's help. I'm hoping to go from baby steps to running soon.

Agreed and we still do not know whether or not he has taken the basic steps:
(1) get a Google webmasters account
(2) verify ownership of the blog with the big 3 search engines
(3) submit a sitemap

Also, after looking at your blog, I really must say write more. You have two posts, one being your hello world post. No matter how much SEO you do, how much referring you do, and how nice you make it look, at the end of the day, no one will come to your site if you have nothing there.

I'm still not clear about whether or not you have verified your blog ownership with the 3 big search engines, and whether or not you have submitted a sitemap. These are important things to do as most of the referrals most bloggers receive come from search engines.

Thanks for everyone's help. All of it is great information that I will put towards my future post.

Ronsrealm, I know I picked a very crowded subject. But for some reason, I don't really feel competitive. That's pretty weird for me to feel that way. I'm just writing (slowly) about what I know and what I feel passionate about. It is like I have all of these ideas, opinions and stories bouncing around in my head and I feel relief when I am able to write them out. Hopefully, as I get better at writing, I'll get more competitive. For right now, I'm just trying to get these thoughts to paper.

By the way, your links were great. I'm going to print them out and study them.

Thanks again.

Hi automotivenation,

Might I suggest, having just had a look at your last post, that you work at keeping your paragraphs quite a bit shorter - it makes text much easier to read on the screen. I know, I don't always take my own advice, but mostly I do.

And, as TT says, writing is what it's all about - get your stuff out there, properly tagged and categorised - heed what TT says about that. If it's well-written, and interesting to a wide-enough segment of society, people will read it.

And those two points are vital - no matter how perfect your tags and categories are, quality and content are the biggies. See http://ronsrants.wordpress.com/2009/12/26/attract-visitors-to-your-blog-first-step-write-one/

Just bear in mind that, by writing about cars, you've chosen a very heavily-subscribed subject - i.e., you have a huge amount of competition.

Unlike baseball fields, "If you build it, they will come," doesn't apply to blogs. Just being there isn't enough - you have to make your presence felt. Give people what they want to read, and they'll come. Just not right now.
