Post thumbnails are 470 pixels wide, unless you make the post Sticky to show off in the featured slider, in which case they’re 750 pixels wide. Keep in mind: if you mark a post as Sticky but the featured image is less than 750 pixels wide, then it won’t display in the slider and will still disappear from the river of posts.

If you failed to upload and set a featured image in each post and until you do upload one into each one the gray box will be there.

Please be aware that you cannot crop the sticky post thumbnails.

- First, I'd like to have a background colour at left and right and another (or just white) in the center, like with other themes. Is that possible? Do I need to change the CSS or is it simpler?

@Elisabeth: You're welcome. Not it's not something you messed up, it's a feature of the theme - sort of a Recent Posts widget, but with excerpts instead of titles only.

Special posts deserve a special place. With Widely, every post assigned with a certain tag and given a featured image will be displayed in the Featured Content Slider on the home page of your site.

I was wondering, is there any reason why a blog post excerpt would show up on a static front page? Is it part of the theme that I just didn't understand, or was something messed up in my preferences.

To remove the post excerpts from the bottom of the page, add this in the CSS editor:

.home.page .front-page-grid .hentry {
    display: none;
}

I want my static front page "Welcome" to only display my welcome message, & all blog posts to show up on the "Blog" page.

I have never used CSS for anything before, so I am unsure how to disable and/or remove the slider from my website's static front page.

No, you don't have to have 6 posts. The slider can display up to 6 posts. Six is best, because then the thumbnails that show below the slider will cover the whole width, but the slider works even with one post only.

1. create a new page
2. change the "page attribution" to showcase template
3. go to settings > reading
4. select that page as the "static page"
5. make sure your posts have featured images that are over 750px wide
....and then, hypothetically, it should work?

Also, in order for this to work, do you already have to have 6 posts? I just started recently, so I only have three posts. They should probably make this a bit more intuitive. xD
