You could use animated GIFs to make a slideshow. Photoshop/ImageReady can be used to make them. They must be made to the exact size you will publish them: If you try to re-size an animated GIF then it won't animate…

Also, there are Flickr slideshows, though I'm not sure that one can control the speed of the images—I've only used them in slideshows in a text widget on my sidebar and wasn't concerned about the speed.

We do have themes with post sliders for featured posts with featured images. In most themes with featured post sliders visitors have to click to advance the slider to the next featured post. But some themes have a featured post slider that automatically advances: Debut, Currents, Linen, On Demand, Modularity Lite. I'm running into the same issue regarding the separation of slideshows from other images that appear on the page. I'm surprised wordpress hasn't figured out a solution to give users more options and flexibility when it comes to displaying photos on the page. Very frustrating.

-Size of the slideshow cannot be increased, which should be essential. The default is way too small.
-Navigation buttons (back, play/stop, forward) appear ON the pictures rather than below them or to the side of them, and it makes no sense, it's distracting, invasive, and ugly.
-Speed of slideshow cannot be adjusted.

Maybe if enough people write to WP they will make these basic changes that would drastically improve the slideshow feature, because as is, it's pretty useless, though it could be a great feature.
