<p>You could use animated GIFs to make a slideshow. Photoshop/ImageReady can be used to make them. They must be made to the exact size you will publish them: If you try to re-size an animated GIF then it won't animate…</p>
<p>Also, there are Flickr slideshows, though I'm not sure that  one can control the speed of the images—I've only used them in slideshows in a text widget on my sidebar and wasn't concerned about the speed.<br />

			<description><![CDATA[<p>I can't help with animations. We do have themes with post sliders for featured posts with featured images. In most themes with featured post sliders visitors have to click to advance the slider to the next featured post. But some themes have a featured post slider that automatically advances: Debut, Currents, Linen, On Demand, Modularity Lite. 			<description><![CDATA[<p>If you are using the Modularity Lite theme then I have searched and currently there are no "speed" settings for the slideshows. If you are not using that theme but another of the free hosted themes and the WordPress.com sideshow then I'm sorry but you can change the slideshow speed. It's not configurable. It's controlled by the user clicking the arrow buttons.

You can exclude images from galleries using shortcode, but not from slideshows.  Since some featured images (like custom headers) will be attached to a page even though you don't want them to show up in a slideshow, this would be great.

			<description><![CDATA[<p>Perhaps many of you here can petition the wordpress staff to make changes to the slideshow feature and add options, as there are currently no options available. </p>
<p>-Size of the slideshow cannot be increased, which should be essential. The default is way too small.<br />
-Navigation buttons (back, play/stop, forward) appear ON the pictures rather than below them or to the side of them, and it makes no sense, it's distracting, invasive, and ugly.<br />
-Speed of slideshow cannot be adjusted.</p>
<p>Maybe if enough people write to WP they will make these basic changes that would drastically improve the slideshow feature, because as is, it's pretty useless, though it could be a great feature.

			<description><![CDATA[<p>That is not something set in the CSS. CSS is a styling document only. The slideshow speed would be set in the underlying theme files somewhere and we do not have access to those.</p>
<p>When staff get the contact form back up and running, perhaps contact them and ask if they could add a control for that under theme options. I don't know if they will, but it is worth asking about.
