I've built my own theme step-by-step following tutorials from wordpress.com. [Wp is installed in a directory & isn't serving the entire site - essentially I'm using wp as a micro-site CMS].

A post example is: http://www.truevoyage.com/db/thailand/koh-tao/scuba-diving-tours.html

Load times for my wp pages are very slow and the back-end too is painfully slow.
Plus I frequently hit 503 and 500 server errors.
I'm worried I've done something silly in developing the theme?

If I use http://tools.pingdom.com/fpt/ my wp pages perform slowly and have long 'wait' and 'connect' times.

So far I've kept the wp installation very light on plugins. [Only Jetpack, Advanced Custom Themes & Preserved HTML Editor Markup are enabled].

Plus I've run the theme-check plug-in and eliminated most errors. The one's not eliminated are irrelevant to what I'm trying to achieve [as far as I know].

I've experimented by switching back to the default theme - 'twentyeleven' and load times appeared slightly better. So I suspect the problem is with my theme.
However, even using my own theme the load time seems intermittent. Sometimes ok, other times fails to load.

I'm out of ideas - can anyone help?
Am I overlooking something obvious?

You need to unsticky all of them.
All blogs display posts in reverse chronological order (latest at the top). You don't set all your posts as stickies, you set only one, if and when it has to remain at the top although no longer the most recent one.

I am having trouble changing the amount of posts visible per page on my freshly pressed blog posts Before the need to view older posts.

I am using the theme Mystique and most of my posts are set as Sticky post in order ro get them displayed at the top of the page as a new post for the blog.

The load time of the post page is terribly slow and loads like 30+ post at once.

If you do not know exactly what I mean just open up my blog.

I am having trouble loading my pages from admin. It says waiting for r-login.wordpress.com and then the connection times out. I have tried clearing my cache, enabling third party cookies, restarting my modem and rebooting my Mac already but to no avail. :(

It is slow loading. I significantly reduced posts per page - from 5 to 2. It is not helping.

Your blog has 245 sticky posts.

Sticky posts override the posts per page setting, which means that your blog isn't done loading its front page until it loads all 245 posts.

You'll need to drop your sticky posts down to a much more conservative number, like 5.

The page is very slow to load for me as well, in Vancouver. I got a notice it was loading from "Sweetmarias" so whatever that is, disable it.

Thank you for your contribution. The beginning of the webpage has been as you said. I just disabled the infinite scroll, but no significant change. It is still slow to load!

You can decrease your page loading time by inserting "the more tag" into your posts and displaying only the beginning of posts on your front page followed by read more links that your visitors can click and then view the whole post on it's own page. If you blog has infinite scroll and you have lost control over how many posts are displaying on the front page then you can disable infinite scroll by using a workaround.

The page is very slow to load. This days I am getting frequent offer of option TO KILL or Wait:
* to publish when new post is posted;
*to find any post or go through different posts.
*Finally, I received complaint about the same problem from one webpage, which wanted to link.

Would appreciate some help.

The option is hidden because you're using "infinite scrolling". Go to Appearance > Widgets, drag a text widget to one of the footer areas, then go to Settings > Reading, disable infinite scrolling, set number of posts per page, save changes.

You've made all your posts sticky posts. You need to "unstick" them.

Go to pages > all pages, click the box of top left of the list to select all the posts, select "edit" from the bulk actions pulldown and then click the "apply" button and deselect "sticky" and then click the "update" button.

You may have more than that one page of posts set as sticky, so you might have to go through a bunch of them.

Also, you are putting way too many images in each post for the front page. I would suggest using the read more tag in your posts to hide some of the images and then people can click on the "read more" link to see the full post with all the images.

I've been told that my blog is really slow to load and upon checking it out I realized that the home page has around 15 posts on it and they aren't even in chronological order. The top three posts are my latest posts, however, the ones below it are in random order. I've changed the settings under the "Reading" option to only display 3 posts and it didn't do anything. Does anyone know how to fix this?

Hi. I have been having a really slow response with my blog for the past several days. Several times it times out before loading. I thought it might be my computer, but one of my regular readers posted that she is having difficulty posting comments.

Hello there,
I'm not experiencing this. How are you connecting to the internet and to WordPress.com? The way you connect to the internet (mobile, satellite, DSL, dial-up) and to your blog, and how many proxy server jumps etc. it takes to connect can cause problems. There maybe be problems with your ISP and/or with the proxy servers. Can you access any of these directly?

Are you using http:// or https:// see http://en.support.wordpress.com/https/ Please try the opposite.

Have you done the usual troubleshooting drill of clearing your browser cache and cookies?
Do you have another browser you can try?

Ok... I have my friends streaming the video here on the bottom of the page from Texas (TWC), and IL (ATT), and they are loading Videopress videos super fast...

Myself, from NYC is using Time Warner is loading it extremely slow for some reason... It's not only videos in this domain, even the Videopress video from other domain on wordpress.com are loading extremely slow >_<

Is this an issue with Time Warne in NYC?? Btw, I load 1080p video on youtube blazingly fast, and i did a spped test and was getting 6.8mbps d/l speed (test from DSLReports.com)

Use excerpts and/or limit the number of posts on front page
Your blog’s load time will increase in accord with the number of posts you display on your main page. To reduce blog loading time use the “read more” tag in your posts and display only excerpts there, and/or reduce the number of posts on your front page.
1. reduce the number of posts appearing on your front page here > Settings > Reading
2. split content by using the more tag or other means of splitting content
3. optimize and presize all images to fit into the blogging space and/or sidebar space in your theme prior to uploading them
reduce the size of images, the number of media embeds, and the number of widgets running script in your sidebar
