I recently started a blog (my first) and have more than ample time to promote it aggressively. Unfortunately, I'm clueless about what to do.

I would like to hear from everybody and anybody who has direct personal experience with successful promotion techniques as well as any referrals to other forums where this same subject has been addressed.

My blog is addressed to mature adults interested in commentary on modern American issues of society and culture but as long as your efforts have been effective promoting any other topics (music, zoology, whatever as long as it isn't salacious) I'm interested in knowing what has worked.

Latley around town I have been seeing acts out of the norm, nice acts. As this seems so foreign to me, it raised the question, what is humanity anymore? As once these very simple acts of kindness were set as a normality for society, why do you think it has now become so rare for one stranger to act out of random kindness for another?

As vilipend said the page is to bright hard to read.

Delete welcome world, delete the UNCATEGORIZED category and give categories a name, one name or maybe two.

Add tags to posts up 9 or 10.

Your last post is to long people won't stick around long enough to read it all.

Otherwise a good start.

I think you're off to a good start. I like that you already have your own background and banner, and that you are clearly aware of your target audience. This will prove very helpful in writing future blog posts, which is good!

My advice is as follows:

1. Delete the first blog post "Welcome world," as this is a default blog post that isn't relevant at all to your blog :D

2. Make use of the "Insert More Tag." As you accumulate more posts on your blog, your readers may find that showing the entire blog post on your homepage will get cumbersome for someone who just wants to browse through your blog posts without having to read every single one in full. The "Insert More Tag" looks like two squares separated by a dotted line. It allows you to make a sort of preview for your blog post.

I'm suggesting this because the first thing I notice about your blog is that as I scroll down I'm hit with a wall of text. I find this almost a little intimidating, and this may happen to someone new who is just trying to get a feel for your blog. It could just be because that post had a lot of information and perhaps too many line separations. Likewise, don't forget that instead of posting links you can link text directly using the chainlink icon.

3. Use visuals in your blog posts. Even if it's just a random picture of a parent and child (you look up pictures on Flickr to use for free by going to "Explore" and clicking "Creative Commons") This will make your blog posts easier to read and create more 'interactive' atmosphere for your readers.

4. Lastly, I find the white blog post on white background look a little daunting. But that's just my opinion. If you'd like examples of blog themes, check out other people's blog on this forum as well as themes made by the WordPress staff. They have wonderful themes to draw inspiration from.

I hope some of my speculations help you out! Keep in mind that I am simply a fellow blogger; I have no blogging expertise, but I've seen enough blogs to feel my advice will at least inspire you. As for promoting, I say reach out to your friends and family first. From there, keep posting on WordPress forums :) Best of luck!

when you first sign in to WordPress and are taken to the first page,
there is a row of tags at the top;
if you click the one saying Read Blogs, once reaching that page
there is a subject list down the left-hand side, and below the list is an
Add Topic box;
type each subject,) such as the ones you are looking for in your above
post), one at a time, and you will find hundreds of thousands (likely more)
of blogs and posts on your interests.
