I have read all the information on ads and WordPress, some of which states that WordPress does NOT allow advertising on its blogs - then these others, which plainly state that WordPress has been 'quietly' inserting ads into blogs since 2006.

So it looks like, rather than hacked, I have been invaded.

Which leaves me with the decision of whether to remain with WordPress as is - or pay $30 for my 'free' blog - or find another host site that actually preserves the meaning of the word free (to say nothing of respects the meaning of a non-commercial blog)...

The one consolation is so few read my blog that the idea that any money could be made from it is a joke.

I do know, however, when the ads were inserted, and where (in my blog) and from what city: Ontario, Canada. So the slim possibility remains that it is indeed a hacker and not the host site I had up until now quite respected as the best in the industry.

Send you viewer the link below - they might have a browser problem - if you visitor is seeing links in words that are ads they probably have a browser problem

I have a hacked blog, too, and have been regaining it, then losing again. Had my other blog (at another host site) hacked and finally got it resolved and now, the WordPress blog is hacked. Have changed passwords, cleared cookies (all the browsers plus 'hidden,' etc.) and even know a little bit about hidden/invisible html coding. I get results when I go into the page that the hackers originally inset the coding and erase what I can't see...

Clears all up.

Then they return. Blog is pungere.wordpress.com.

That did work for me. I made a category called "news" be the default. Now, "news" cannot be deleted, and "uncategorized" now has a red link (underneath, appears with a hover) for deleting.

You can also add new categories and manage existing ones from Posts -> Categories in your dashboard. The Posts -> Categories page in your dashboard displays all your categories and shows the name, description, and number of posts belonging to each category. If you move your mouse over a category a set of options will appear, allowing you to edit, quick-edit, or delete that category.
Have you tried accessing your categories there?

That's odd. Which browser and version of it are you using?
Please also confirm which the the two describe below that you did.

It will be solved if you understand that the default category cannot be deleted until after you have either (1) created another default category or (2) you have assigned an existing category to become the default category. When you have one of those two then you will be able to delete the default Uncategorized category.

No, my issue was not solved.

From my viewpoint, there is no way possible to remove the "uncategorized" label in my category list, because there is NO box to check next to that word in my category list. I think it is a default, unfortunately.

I'm sorry that I don't think I can help anymore. There was another post earlier today about new categories not showing up. I don't know if that is connected to your question though.

I do not think I created a custom menu. I added the widget for "categories".

What I did was create a post, and instead of having it be "uncategorized" I added a category for that post. Then I did it for another post, creating a new category.

I just went back to add tags to the posts that matched the categories to see if this would help, but still, when I hit the widget for categories that I dragged into the appropriate column, there are no categories. The widget is there and it looks "live" but it has no entries. All it says is "Select categories"

If you create a custom menu, then you must add links. If your custom menu includes links to category pages, then each time you add a category you must edit your custom menu to include the new category page links to your menu.

If you add a category widget to your sidebar, does that automatically update? If so, then it is acting as it should.

But with a custom menu, the software does not automatically add tabs or drop-down items: the key word is "custom" so you must add them yourself.

Because your blog is not visible to me, I may be misunderstanding your response. If so, please clarify.

I created two posts with different tags for each. I created a category in the drop down menu and clicked it. The posts say they were "posted in ------" and the category shows up at the bottom of the post, but on the drop down menu widget, the two categories that I created do not appear.

That is why I was wondering if my old browser is causing the difficulty. The Archives has nothing in it, either, and I have created three posts.

The private blog setting should not affect whether a category appears or not in a cat widget. You have assigned a post to the new category? When you look at that post, are you saying that it is not categorized in your new category?

(I asked for a link to be sure you are talking about a wp.com blog… which you are, and private is private: I am not staff and can not see your blog)

This is useful information! I have an additional question under the same topic. I have published a post under a new category, but it still does not show up. Since I am just starting this blog, it is not yet public. Could the private setting be a reason why the categories do not show up?

If that is not it, how about using an older browser that WordPress says should be upgraded? (I have to but a new computer to do that ...)

Dashboard —> Settings —> Writing Settings —> Default Post Category (choose from drop-down menu) —> Save Changes

Then Posts —> Categories —> delete "Uncategorized"

Thanks for those tips. I was not aware that a Category will not display until I publish at least one post that I've assigned that category to.

I changed my theme to the old version as categories are showing up on that theme.

I wish I could get rid of the "Uncategorized" though.

Also note that "Uncategorized" is the default Category that displays when we do not assign a category to a post. You can set up a default Category of your own choice.

I added some more categories to my blog and I cannot get them to show up.

I also changed my blog to a new version/theme, as I don't think my previous blog theme supported categories. Was I correct in that assumption?

Won't work. You would have to get wordpress.com's nameservers to assign the MX and staff won't allow that. It would be too easy to abuse.

I know WordPress FAQ says to change the Nameservers in order to map a domain I own onto my blog. I know it says that I will not be able to use the email or other features from my domain unless I point a subdomain to my blog instead. BUT....

Network Solutions' DNS Manager Advanced Tools seems to allow me to split the www and email mapping without using supdomains. I tried using the IP of one of WordPress' Nameservers but this didn't work because I couldn't get past the "Add a Domain" page since it said the Nameserver's weren't changed.

Is anyone familiar with this problem, or know for sure that this method will not allow me to use http://www.mydomain.com -> myblog AND [email redacted]
