Wow, I just clicked on time thief's link and realized it is the WordPress reblog feature that you are referring to. Was not aware this feature allowed one to reblog the entire post. Would like to see what it looks like since I thought it was a snippet. I too think it should be opt-in. RE a DMCA, if the web host--in this case WordPress is sanctioning reblogging, it's unlikely they'd take it down. This is very unsettling to me

do you mean that someone copied your entire post on another blog and you are unable to comment on the post on their blog? Unfortunately this happens frequently. If it is not another WordPress.com, there is nothing WordPress can do about it.

What I do is send what's called a "DMCA takedown notice" to the admin of the blog and their web host for copyright violation. You can find a sample notice if you Google it. This usually does the trick. I also have a copyright notice and TOS prominently featured on my blog, to deter this sort of thing.

Thank you timethief, I have already contacted support regarding this matter and I am awaiting a reply.

I still think that allowing others to re-blog should be an option we have to activate, I have spoken to a number of people who blog using WordPress and non of them were aware of this function, all assumed that if they had their comments set for moderation then that protected them, not realising that this could be over-ridden by someone re-blogging their post.

It does make a mockery of the WordPress security settings if there is no way to disable the re-blog option.

I am happy for people to remark on my posts and yes people can and do copy and paste things all the time. Nothing at all I can do to stop that I know.

I have no desire to become the thought police, but I do object to someone being able to lift an entire post, re-blog it in the exact same format, so that should a screen grab be made it looks like it is a post on my own site, still showing me as author, but with my ability to moderate comments removed (I have comment moderation set for a reason after all). Should anything offensive be said, then anyone who doesn't understand how re-blogging works will assume that I have allowed that comment to remain, when in actual fact I have no way to remove it, or even comment directly on it unless the re-blogger chooses to allow me to do so.

I have no desire to control the internet, I just want don't think it is right for comment moderation to be removed at the point someone re-blogs it. If a post already has comment moderation or a no comments allowed set on a particular post, then should it be re-blogged, those settings should remain and the original author should be the one moderating comments, not the person who is simply re-blogging an entire post!

Comment moderation is offered more as a spam prevention measure than as a tool to control what's said about your posts, really. After all, there's nothing to stop someone else posting their reponse to their post on their own blog if it didn't make it through moderation, though of course you'd be able to censor the trackback.

I'd suggest posting a prominent notice in your sidebar saying that you would prefer it if your posts were not reblogged, stating your reasons why. Decent people will be happy to comply with your wishes and anyone else would just copy/paste your stuff regardless.

I just don't see any point in WordPress offering comment moderation if that disappears as soon as it is re-blogged. There should be an option to block re-blogging in the same way that I can block comments should I wish to.

It isn't so much the fact they re-blogged that bothers me, but that I have my options set so that I have to approve any comments made, now I find that by someone re-blogging my entire post (not just an excerpt) I have lost any control over comments made. This worries me a great deal, why offer those options if they don't actually mean anything and can be so easily over-ridden?

Surely if WordPress can see a need to offer comment moderation it should also see a need to have re-blogging approval? I know I can't stop people copy & pasting etc, but this is a case where the entire post, including a copyrighted image, has simply been re-blogged in full and on a blog that has nothing to do with the original content.

And I had a smaller concern months ago that I was able to resolve by contacting Technorati and using the "www" URL, but possibly its policy has changed.

I did not not know about http://stolen.wordpress.com/ and that is also helpful. I am hoping that I can stop the splogging or otherwise resolve this issue in a few days with one of these suggestions.

Second, they are probably getting your posts from your RSS feed. Go to settings > reading, and in the syndication section, change it to display "summary". I have quite a few taking my stuff via the RSS feed, and all they get is the summary, a sentence or two.

A splogger has been scraping my blog and stealing all my posts every day since August 12 (and because I post at least once a day, this is a large number of posts). My posts now appear on Technorati under the name of the Polish blog "Shoppin' -- just shopping!" which uses the URL http://www.shopping.pl (of course, with no link to my blog, One-Minute Book Reviews, http://www.oneminutebookreviews.wordpress.com/) The splogger has been so successful at stealing my posts that s/he has now apparently hijacked my URL also. I've been trying for days to fill out the Technorati complaint form but keep getting the message, "Please enter a valid URL."

I am more than willing to go through proper channels by complaining to Technorati, but I can't do this when it has abruptly stopped recognizing a URL that it has recognized faithfully for nearly two years. And I have been trying since Aug. 12 to resolve this own my own, and I can't find anything that helps in the Forums.

Could someone in WP admin kindly tell Technorati that my URL is valid? (This situation could be very easily resolved if Technorati would just de-list the thief who is stealing all his or her content from me and others. There is no problem on Ice Rocket.) Thank you.

@ balnu147 I really agree with your attitude, most be people realize what a splog is when they come across them as readers.

I do report them to their web hosts, most of the time they will send an E-mail thank you and delete the blog.
The webhosts that dont take action, well i dont let it get under my skin anymore.

I appreciate this conversation as I've been puzzling over this too; just haven't figured out yet whether or not I should let it worry me.

I have a question based on what what fearthseeds said. In most of my posts, I usually link back to at least one earlier post. This would be helpful for folks finding me as the real author?

What you can do is insert a link to your About Page, maybe in an image,... if your entire post is scraped, like mine have been, there's the possibility of a trackback to your site. You can also put a copyright image at the top of your posts explaining how much like parasites sploggers are, or leave a copyright notice in a piece of text at the top of your post in the colour of your theme so the text isn't visible to your readers, but gets picked up by the splog.

Or write posts occasionally explaining what sploggers and scrapers are so bloggers who read your stuff can understand what's happening to their work. It's always better to do something than nothing when it comes to protecting your intellectual property.

Try this... http://exposingsploggers.wordpress.com/
