WordPress by default will attempt to send a trackback to any place you link to. This is good as it lets the person know you are linking to one of their articles/posts. In the case of your own blog, it presents another way for people to perhaps get to the other article you linked to in your post. Some people like them and some do not. I typically leave them on and then delete the trackback on my own posts to sort of keep things clean. That allows others to link to your articles/posts and then you will get a trackback notification that they have linked to you, and links from outside sources are always good for search engine ranking.

If you want to turn tack backs off, go to settings > discussion and click un-ckeck the top item and save changes.

Since you had a link in your post to a previous post, WordPress automatically puts a comment on that post (a linkback) to help you identify when people link to your content. So the comment was supposed to appear (I believe there may be an option for it, but can't quite recall). It's up to you whether you want to publish it, it just helps people navigate from IEEE post to a related one.

Macmanx, thanks for your input. If you've visited my jmnartsy blog, you will notice that there are no replies to any comments; this is the way I prefer it. I reply to comments via my hotmail email account directly to each commenter's email address; that is what I was referring to. In other words, a hack!

From where I'm sitting, someone who knows what they're doing has done this as my hotmail account is fine (it too is an HTTPS connection). However, this did prompt my memory as I had noticed, just on that blog, recently one or two spam comments that were using text directly from my Gravatar profile. I had dismissed this and had deleted those spam comments, but since then have updated the profile as I had forgotten that I'd placed my hotmail email address there as a public email. I have now removed that address and also added another verified services link (my Google+ profile) and refreshed a few other elements therein. I trust this will solve the problem and thank the engineer who provided this very important prompt -- never give out any personal details online, ever!

I can't explain why you are suddenly getting self-pings, unless you unwittingly changed something.

Times might have something to do with it.
You have a post on the Jack Cade blog called The Nameless Things published 20 Aug. 2012 at 12:34am which is essentially a link to the poem of the same title on the Poetry Matthew etc. blog. It shows a pingback on the same date, but at 6:36 am. I cannot see what time the post itself was published there though.
