I took a quick look myself to see what I could find, and I noticed that the rule you mentioned from Chateau's stylesheet is setup to work on images that have a class of "size-full":

img.size-full {
max-width: 100%;
width: auto; /* Prevent stretching of full-size images with height and width attributes in IE8 */
}

And the images in the http://getvelvet.org/2012/10/11/grand-designs-live-part-3/ post are using a class of "size-large". Can you try inserting some of the images as full width instead of large to see if that fixes the problem for you in IE8?

I ended up fixing it by creating a new photo at the exact dimensions the featured photo is. So I'll just have to have 2 of each photo in my media library.

Since the bug was fixed, you shouldn't need to upload featured images that are the exact dimensions of your theme. The Columnist should be able to create the correctly sized thumbnails.

For the next featured image you set, could you try with a regularly-sized image to see if the issue is fixed for you? I only ask because if you were to continue uploading thumbnails sized exactly for The Columnist theme, and wanted to one day switch themes to a theme with larger thumbnails, you would need to reset all of your old featured images.

Thank you for your patience in helping us troubleshoot this.

Hi everyone!
I have an issue with the images in my blog when view it in IE (IE 8 to be precise) - they are stretched vertically. In Safari, Google Chrome and Firefox everything looks fine.
I've spent couple of weeks already to figure out the solution. I noticed that when I send my posts via e-mail, the system somehow fixes this problem automatically and posts look nice everywhere, but when I download images in "New post" field through "Add media" icon - they don't. I wouldn't mind to send posts via e-mail all the time... but the last time it just didn't work - no images displayed at all.. I tried twice - same result.
So, the search on forums led to a couple of solutions - put compatibility code and put specific code for images. To my surprise my theme (I'm using Chateau) already has these codes. Below is the code for images, which is supposed to work exactly the way I want.

/* Images */
.post-entry img {
border: 1px solid;
border-color: #ddd #ccc #ccc #ddd;
height: auto;
left: -4px;
max-width: 100%;
padding: 3px;
position: relative;
-moz-box-shadow: 4px 4px 12px #ccc;
-webkit-box-shadow: 4px 4px 12px #ccc;
box-shadow: 4px 4px 12px #ccc;
}
img[class*="align"],
img[class*="wp-image-"] {
height: auto; /* Make sure images with WordPress-added height and width attributes are scaled correctly */
}
img.size-full {
max-width: 100%;
width: auto; /* Prevent stretching of full-size images with height and width attributes in IE8 */
}

As you may guess, it doesn't work properly for some reasons.
Can anyone please advice me how to fix it?

Seems like a redundant work around for a CMS that's supposed to be able to take care of that for you.

Hi there,

An update to WordPress.com caused some issues with images in different themes to be stretched, but has since been fixed.

It's likely that you're seeing a cached version of your site, having visited the site while the bug was present.

I would recommend clearing your browser cache to make sure that you hare viewing the most up-to-date version of your site.

You'll want to go to Dashboard->Settings->Writing and select "Wordpress should correct invalidly nested XHTML" and save. Then go to Dashboard->Posts and select all posts down to and inclluding the one messing up, and change them to Drafts. Then change them back. That forces the XHTML setting to work on those already-done post, and what that does is it fixes any HTML errors in your blog.

And when I look at my blog through bloglovin.com the pics are stretched and the fonts and placement of things change from how I have them, why is that? What can I do to stop this? Thanks!

Have you read both of the tutorials for Duster? I think you will find your answer in them.

I'm using Chrome and the pictures are just fine for me.

The photos will automatically be shrunk to the widest width that can be displayed. I don't think that's 1000px wide.

Is there an issue with different browsers? I see them just fine too but when I used a different computer on two different occasions the photos were stretched.

http://azislamicschool.com/2011/04/30/aca-career-day/ for this post especially.

I really like big pictures. How is it that the photos are still appearing if the width is only 600 pixels?

Thank you for the quick response!

I'm not seeing that on any of your images. They all look just fine to me. Can you give us a specific example of a post with stretched-out images?

Also, there's no need to upload them full size like that. You've only got about 600 pixels width in that theme.
