You activate a theme in Appearance > Themes. For the rest, yes, the customizer is buggy, try using the other sections of the dashboard sidebar instead. See this post of mine:

Is there something wrong with the customization option for the set themes on wordpress.com? I am unable to access any of the themes, let alone customize them.

Thanks for that timethief I have but I have to admit to being a real newbie at this and I guess there's something I'm missing.

I have created a page, set it to be a static page, set it to be a Home under templates and created 3 pages with just a picture in and added then as pages under the home slider in customize but no dice.

I've managed to change the background and header text colours just to prove to myself that it's updating.

I don't see any assigned widgets and certainly no slider widget, wonder if that's the problem. Must learn more but a little frustrated that the description either doesn't explain correctly or assumes knowledge I don't have...

Appearance > Menus. Comet supports two (optional) custom menus, one above and one below the blog title etc.

I notice in some of the Comet examples, some users have somehow moved the navigation menu below the header instead of the default above the header - how did they do that??

Thanks, justpi, but none of those seem to meet the criteria described above, or come as close to it as Fresh & Clean. For example "Fresh News" looks ok, but it uses an oddball menu system based on categories rather than pages. Currents doesn't include blurbs in post listings. Twenty-Eleven doesn't really have a slider, it has a weird mapping of featured images in the header. Academia looks nice, but doesn't overlay any text on its slider. Oxygen has a really ugly text overlay on the slider. I use wordpress for the website of professional organizations - which I would think wordpress would want to support - and it did it well with Fresh & Clean.

Correct. You can only activate themes on your site that are found on our WordPress.com themes page: http://theme.wordpress.com/

With your custom menu, I recommend watching the video found on this page as it is really helpful in configuring and renaming menu items in addition to going over how the menu is set up and enabled: http://en.support.wordpress.com/menus/

Once you get your menu properly configured, you will be able to simply assign a category to your new posts and they will show up under the proper category menu item. Here's more information on categories: http://en.support.wordpress.com/posts/categories/

I went to your site and I wasn't able to see the post that you "unstuck" being on more than one page. If you can let me know what post is giving you trouble, I'll be happy to take a closer look.

I'm majorly bummed that Fresh & Clean was retired - it was exactly what I needed for some new sites I want to create and I cannot find anything vaguely like it.

My needs are simple - a clean, professional looking site with a custom header, nice listing of summaries of posts with thumbnails, and a nice, normal looking feature posts slider.

Thanks very much for your answer. I am not looking for a plug-in, I don't have any on my MacBook. But it seems when I chose the 2012 theme when I clicked on the live preview I was able to see it on my site. Then I went back and hit activate and it loaded. That is the one I have been having such a hard time configuring. That's why I asked if we were able to upload themes.

I set up the menu yesterday, but I am still having problems getting the right pages/posts to appear under the right category, and if I do manage it then I can't get rid of the old menu title. One other thing. I have a sticky that was on my home page which I changed to a static [maybe not a good idea?], so I "unstuck" it so I could put it on the front page along with the Greetings. But still can't move it and it's on every page.
I don't know been working on getting this right for over two weeks, shame I ever upgraded and now too late to do anything about it except maybe try a different them.

I do appreciate your help, very very MUCH...

Yes, your site is still hosted on WordPress.com even with the upgrade. We don't allow plugins on WordPress.com for security reasons. Also, themes can't be uploaded to WordPress.com. In WordPress Pro you can get a new name that ends in .org/net/ etc. but are you still hosted by WordPress? I am wondering because it says you can't download another theme or plug-ins. Not interested in plug-ins but it looks like I can change my theme. What I can't do, or figure out is how to change the posts I put on or that are already on the site to different 'pages' I want to be able to put certain ones under different headings I have created in the menu and can't seem to find out how. I also have validated Zoho email and can't find a place or way to put it on my site, along with the Zoho Chat that I opted for. Could you please give me a walk-through or some help. I have already spent over two weeks trying to get this to work. I still have the name bretcop.wordpress.com, the new name I made primary which came with the update to Pro is [email redacted]

I am getting a bit off the original topic. However, after a few days I came back to the forum to see if I had any responses. I put in some search criteria but could not find my thread. Luckily i saved the email that I got from danialisreading's reply and was able to find my thread from the email. I'm not sure how I would have found the thread if I had deleted that email.

Oh okay I understand now. I was confused because the home slider option wasn't available in the customizer, but that was because I hadn't selected home in attributes. I get it now!

You will need to configure the theme to look like the one in the demo. The demo is using the "home page template" which cycles through select top level pages on your site. You will have to create a page called "home" (or whatever you want your main page to be labeled) and then set that page as the static front page for your site. If you want a blog page also to show your posts,

You don't need code to do this, but with the newer configurable themes you do have to jump through some hoops. Check the posts on the Stay tag in the themes forum for tips http://en.forums.wordpress.com/tags/stay

Also, that's not a widget. You need to be clear about your terms, because if you're looking for theme options under Widgets instead of Appearance on your dashboard, you're going to waste a lot of time.

I was under the impression that wordpress.com did not require lots of coding as opposed to wordpress.org but I find myself unable to recreate the look of even the free themes. I activate them and all of the places to put images are gone! I want a big three picture slideshow like the home page of the Stay theme but I don't see a widget that does that! Please help!
