The css editing upgrade is not recommended for bloggers who do not have previous css editing skills. There is no staff support for learning css editing. You will be doing the css editing yourself. The Sandbox10 theme used to place another theme's stylesheet into it and edit the css in. Sandbox10 is a theme rich with powerful and dynamic semantic class selectors; it's a canvas for CSS artists.

When you post to the css customization forum it's a good idea to state which theme you are customizing the css for.

i have bought the upgrade, and after doing what I thought was changing the culumn width on an exisiting theme I have up, chose a non fixed width theme and accepted that it would be less pretty like that, but I needed to fix the font size. I opened the css and upped every fons size by 2, clicked save and nothing changed

now what do i do?

Is there a way to just change the column width of an existing theme?
if not
is there a way to change the font size?

I'm only learning css myself. I understand what you mean and do not know why the theme has been coded the way it has. I'll bump this up to css experts to get an answer your question.

I'm trying to alter the font family for headings H1, H2, H3 etc in Ambiru theme. While I have been able to alter most of the fonts using the body selector, my theme seems to be loading the author H styles after my custom style-sheet as they remain in the original font and when I debug with firebug, the original styles appear after mine and cancel mine out. I've tried over-riding this using !important, but its still not working. Does anyone know why this is?

Go to write, write post. Below the textarea you will see the upload feature. There just browse for your image and that's it. To know its path, make sure the 'full' (next to Show:) and 'none' (next to Link To:) radio buttons are checked and click on the [Send to Editor] button. That's it.

How do I upload images that I want to use in my custom CSS? For example instead of the text for the title of my blog, I would like to show an image of my logo, but how do I upload it so that I can call it from the custom CSS?

Could you explain a bit further, atthe404? If it is possible to remove avatars in Garland's comments, I'd like to be able to do it.

Here's what WordPress support said about it:

I'm sorry but the theme cannot be modified with css to do what you need. It would require the actual code to be changed and we do not allow that.

For the sake of those who have the same question I had, it is not possible to not display avatars on comments when using the Garland theme. WordPress support told me that directly - and it was a quick response, too, BTW.

Buying the upgrade and attempting to css-style your way out of the problem won't work, either, they said, because the presence of an avatar is specified in the code, which civilians can't touch.

Good suggestion, raincoaster, but my co-bloggers in what will be a group blog are very high on the Garland theme. As a workaround, I've uploaded a white box as my avatar, so it appears that nothing is appearing. Of course that won't work for those who haven't uploaded anything at all - they'll get the default shadowy figure.

Well there are several templates that don't display avatars, and you can configure the Recent Comments widget so it doesn't show avatars either, so why not change those two things instead, if that's all you want?

I'm delighted with the ease of use of the provided wordpress.com themes, but as with calypsotune above, I would like to make avatars go away.

Is there a way to excise the avatar code with something that can be tacked onto the end of the css stylesheet to override it? I would happily buy an upgrade for that alone.

I purchased the ability to customize css. I was at first completely able to edit the css, changing colors and column widths.

Now I am no longer able to edit the css.

I edit my css code and save it to notepad. Then I paste my css edits into the CSS Stylesheet Editor. To absolutely no effect.

I'm certain I am doing something wrong but what?

I'd appreciate some help.

Themes outside of what you see here ->Presentation -> themes are a "no go". The files you have downloaded are for wordpress.org free standing software. WordPress.com is on wp-MU multi-user software. They are differenet. Have you read thye sticky post at the head of the forum titled "Please read me first before posting"?

Ok. So I am a "newb" at all this CSS stuff, so these questions are probably going to seem elementary or just plain stupid to some of you....but....I must start somewhere!!

I just purchased the custom CSS upgrade and I downloaded some other "themes" that I would like to play with on my blog. (themes outside of what WordPress offers)

I have no idea where to start.

I downloaded two separate themes. Both "zipped" files contained all kind of stuff I don't understand, and I don't know where I am supposed to copy and paste this new info. I tried to import this new info into my CSS spreadsheet.....and I have seen nothing new whatsoever. When I previewed the new look...nothing was different.

Please help!

yes, in addition to firefox+firebug, i use microsoft's visual web developer for editting CSS.
* it's free
* it highlights the CSS, so it's easier to read
* auto-suggestion
* in the sidebar, it shows my CSS grouped by elements, classes, or id's.

i'm sure there are other good text editors out there, but for the love of god, don't use notepad.

Just a pointer for folk asking about classes. Although we can not edit the html an important first step to the CSS is reading and in time understanding how the various templates - beginning with index.php (the first page) are marked up. We need to know for example what the major containers (divs) are called. How the spans are aplied. And what each class does. There is no two ways to cut this. It takes time even for experienced users. In some ways writing a new theme is easier than adapting a current one for that reason. Plus of course if you change themes half way you might need to retrace some steps. The important thing is that the learning process is fun, and in time very valuable.

Next up - it is worth restating that Firefox is not only a stunning browser - as is Opera - but they both come with a humungous amount of tools that are very handy for this type of malarkey.

It is also worth getting fitted up with a half decent text editor for your platform. Like anything else in life having the right tools really helps. The good news is that all this stuff is free. Good luck. :)

I purchased the custom css upgrade. but when i go to presentation -> edit css, i am still unable to edit and save any css. Only the preview option is available. Is this some kind of bug or something? Or do I have to wait a few days before the custom css is activated. Or do I have toactivate somewhere?
