Glad you got it working Lisa. That's a fairly old post, I'm not sure if anything has changed with Twenty Ten since then, I'll review it and update.
Also as Timethief pointed out .com theme versions are sometimes different than self hosted so the layout could altered.

Twenty Ten has two sidebar widget areas (extra-useful for those of you who customize your CSS) as well as four footer widget areas. It’s easy to load Twenty Ten up with lots of widgets without sacrificing your blog’s design. http://theme.wordpress.com/themes/twentyten/

Timethief, thanks for explaining the infinite scroll thing. At least now I know I didn't mess something up. What I'm wondering, though, is how this will effect themes that have footer widgets. Won't it pretty much render them useless?

I was messing around in Settings and somehow seemed to have clicked something that makes it so you can only scroll so far, then you get a message to continue scrolling, but at least you get to the footer section eventually. Actually, I've never understood footer widgets anyway, because it seems like no one scrolls down that far.

Okay. Thanks. So why did it add the sidebar? Or do you think it simply changed the width of the main column so it looks like there's a second sidebar? The way I understand it (at least from what I've read) is that there are actually a primary and secondary column in Twenty Ten, but they're stacked on top of each other. What some people see to be suggesting is moving the primary column to the left and keeping the secondary column on the right. And the code change did successfully move my primary column to the left.

I guess what I don't understand is what CSS can modify and what it can't. I thought it could change the alignment of things as well as font, color, etc. Do you know if it's true about two columns being stacked on top of one another? If you can't add a column, why are so many people saying you can? Or is that on WordPress.org? I know I've seen some modified Twenty Ten themes with both a left and right sidebar.

Staff have been introducing “infinite scroll" to themes — a site wide change that will be applied to all themes that are suitable for the implementation. http://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/to-infinity?replies=137

Disabling the infinite scroll feature to get rid of the pop-up in the footer results in a "Load More Posts" tab, and you can't disable that "Load More Posts" tab from appearing and have "previous post" and "next post" links, without the Custom Design upgrade. I hasten to add that I don't help with CSS editing but the upgrade does come with Staff support.

Does the Custom Design upgrade let me edit HTML?
No. The Custom Design upgrade allows you to edit fonts and CSS only. You can change the appearance of a theme, but not its HTML markup, PHP code, or content. ... http://en.support.wordpress.com/custom-design/#frequently-asked-questions

Please be aware that the WordPress.ORG version of the theme is not the one we have here at WordPress.COM. Also be aware the CSS upgrade cannot be used to add a sidebar to pages which do not have one already. That would require hacking of the underling PHP script files, which we cannot do on free hosted WordPress.com blog .We cannot edit templates and themes on WordPress.com blogs. All CSS editing can be used for is to change appearance, and not the way any theme functions.

I've tried to add a third column to Twenty Ten as this guy recommends by modifying the CSS code. http://zeaks.org/twenty-ten/twenty-ten-child-theme-how-to/ The column is showing up, and it's listed in the widget area as a secondary widget area, but when I drag widgets into it, they don't show up on the blog. There's just a big white space there. I've been searching the forums for advice, but all I've found is something about "registering" the sidebar, which appears to have something to do with changing the php. The supposed instructions for doing this don't really explain anything, and besides, I saw a notice that says you can't change the html or php for a template.

Another problem I have is that all the blog posts I've ever done seem to be showing up on the front page, and I can't reset this in the "reading" section of settings.

Hi Leo,

I'm not sure why, but the theme was fine all along until it started dropping one of the columns earlier this month while using Google Chrome, but if I viewed it in Firefox it looked fine. At the time you looked at it, it was still the "Under the Influence" theme, but I just changed it now to an alternate theme.

I just took a look at your blog, and three columns are showing up too so I presume you've fixed your problem as well.

Btw, good luck with your blog; it looks interesting!

I'm encountering a problem with my 3 columns in "under the influence" and was wondering if possibly there is a website problem. When I click on my link the two column posts and the side column show up for a second, and then it reverts to one column post and the side column. I don't want to keep trying to fix it if it is a website issue, then again, I don't know if it is.

The blog I need help with is http://yourcommunityliaison.wordpress.com/

To have three columns of categorical content displayed on the main page would require hacking the theme PHP script files and we do not have access to those. This is a multi-user platform meaning we share all the underlying theme and core wordpress files and any change by one would change it for all others using that theme.
