i've met matt. had drinks with matt. i think matt is great. he's right about orphans at the end of body paragraphs. but not in the ".entry-title" or header titles. the tool should be refined as a scapel, not a bludgeon. this is an error, when it comes to titles/css - ".entry-title" and needs to be fixed.

You don't have to reiterate, and I agree with you, but I'm telling you WP doesn't consider it an error. It's an idea of the founder of WP himself: I have him on video, saying how much he hates orphans and joking about his invention with (quote) "I'm that anal".

that makes no sense. if it's internationalization, why is it purposely sticking the "nbsp;" (with ampersand in front) between the second-to-last and the last word of each ".entry-title"? i can understand if wp has a problem with orphan words on the last line in the body of a document paragraphe, but putting it in ".entry-title" is just ridiculous.

the bugs stand and need to be addressed. to reiterate —

the option to completely turn off and remove the visual editor must be returned as a writing option.
the visual editor/TinyMCE needs to be fixed so it does not erroneously insert " " where it was not ever requested and cause unwanted line breaks, especially in the title/css- ".entry-title."

this should not be happening in the title/css - ".entry-title".

that's all supposed to say "nbsp;" with an amperstand in front, but this silly forum removes it or reads at actual html code. grrr...

This has nothing to do with Visual vs Text editor, and I'm sorry to say it's not a bug, it's intentional. See this recent reply of mine:

this issue has been reported before, as far back as 2007. it is still a problematic issue when users/clients use the visual editor in wordpress.com (which is from the TinyMCE plug-in), no matter how much i warn them away from using the visual editor. basically, the TinyMCE/Visual Editor in the wp.com dashboard inserts erroneous, not asked for " " (non breaking space character) between the second to last and the last word in the title (css class ".entry-title").

this has been reported as far back as 2007, in these posts here. it has never been properly fixed or resolved —

this causes problems in themes like we use for http://mindfulfitnessmovement.wordpress.com using the “sight” theme on the home page, as it causes the final words to be forced down below the featured pic on a post excerpt, creating an unnatural and not elegant looking break in the line.

this issue doesn't happen if you compose in the html/text editor alone.

i have tried getting rid of the " " several times. i have tried, several times, to type just a space in, update or save, and go look at the preview. same issue, the " " is still there. i have tried cutting and pasting a normal space into where the " " is and then saving/updating. still, the " " comes back in the .entry-title.

this is really, really very annoying. also, in these previous posts, the recommendation was to turn off the visual editor in your user profile options. i have been to the user profile options, settings options, general & writing options — nowhere, any longer, is there any option to turn the visual editor/TinyMCE off. yet nowhere in the wordpress.com documentation does it say that the option to turn off the visual editor is no longer available.

so there are two bugs that need fixing here —

Am I going to have to fix this manually for HTML 5 browser to read or will wordpress correct phased out tags?

I'm fighting the HTML5/TinyMCE issue on a couple of sites right now. They have switched to newer HTML5 themes, and the TinyMCE editor is causing issues. Try telling site owners that they have to edit all the various tables they've used for all their bits and bobbles and replace the obsolete HTML tags the editor puts in with inline CSS, but first, make sure you are wearing a helmet and bullet proof vest.

Just FYI, here is a list of HTML tags that are not supported in HTML5. TinyMCE currently uses all of them.

For whatever reason, wordpress uses a pared down version of the editor, and does not include the table functions (along with many other functions). The issue here right now, is that wordpress.COM is now using HTML5 doc type, and the TinyMCE editor creates tables that are not compatible with HTML5. They are using obsolete tags and attributes which in a site with a doctype of HTML5 means that the browsers are going to ignore those obsolete tags and attributes.

I think having the ability to create tables directly in the editor here would be great, but there is no chance of it happening until Moxiecode takes care of the HTML5 incompatibilities. Given their track record, that is not likely to happen quickly.

Also, the wordpress.ORG editor does not come with the full editor. You have to install a plugin to get the added features, so it isn't fair to say that .ORG has it, but .COM does not. The base editors in .COM and .ORG are identical.

Thanks for the extra tips. My goal is to eventually get more people from my group contributing to the blog and working myself out of a job. Since they minimally tech savy and a bit tech phobic my preference would be to have everything in one piece, on wordpress.com

Not everyone is on Windows and I have had frustrating issues copying and pasting marked up text into blogs. I can only imagine that would be worse for less tech savy people. Right now I make tables in my own copy of the wordpress.org software, but I would like other people to eventually get into authoring for the blog. The TinyMCE editor already has the functionality, even the buttons, it just needs to be exposed.

Are you aware that you can use windowslivewriter to post to your blog and that it contains an HTML tables feature? In addition there are HTML table generators we can use and creating HTML tables manually is not difficult. I know from my own copy of wordpress.org software that I can install a plugin that will expose more buttons in the Visual Editor ( TinyMCE Editor ). Since wordpress.com doesn't have the feature of plugins I can't do this.

This would be extremely useful, particularly exposing the button to make HTML tables. Typing in those table tags is time consuming and laborious.......everything wordpress.com is against.

I put up a wordpress.com blog for a nonprofit group. Putting up itineraries of events is a frequent occurence, so it really hurts not having something automatic for tables. I'm sure other small groups are on wordpress.com to get the word out about their free events.

Here's so feedback. I skimmed your About page -- forgive me but I'm already reading over 200 blogs and I did not choose to read.

I am visually challenged. What I did immediately when I clicked into your About page was to hold down the Cntrl key on my keyboard and simultaneously click the - (minus sign) key so I could reduce the size of the font. Again, your current theme uses full justification to fix that, use the following instead of the one I put in above to override that and give you standard left alignment.

On the image border thing, add this right after the <img tag in the HTML for the image

style="border: medium none;"

Also go to settings > writing and select "WordPress should correct invalidly nested XHTML automatically" and click save changes. This will correct any errant HTML errors that might slip past you.
