Domains in redemption cannot be transferred.

Domain expiration is a lengthy and complicated process that takes about 80 days. During this time, your domain may be put up for auction or sold on back-order. You can learn more about expired domains here: http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/domain-expiration/

The good news is that you can still recover your domain, as it has not yet been deleted or purchased by someone else. A late renewal fee of $80 will be added to the regular price of renewal.

You can renew this domain and manage all your other upgrades under Store > My Upgrades in your dashboard.

Dashboard >> Store >> My Upgrades >> If there is a transfer button associated with the domain name

Not completely sure if a domain name in Redemption can be transferred - but worth a try -

also you or your friend will need staff help to get the name out of redemption and renew it.

If I considered not being able to use plugins as a big deal then why I would I be here? Why would I have moved a blog off self hosting and back onto this platform? I posted the links to the support documentation entries above that answer all your questions. I'm not into chatting on this subject because the support forum searchbox is full of threads like this one and there are other threads that need answering. If you wish to have WordPress.com continue to free host your content be clear on the fact that you get only what you pay for when you purchase a domain mapping upgrade. Every day we Volunteers have to burst the bubble of those who poste here fanatazing that they get more than what is clearly stated in the support documentation entries I posted links to above, which some apparently do not read.

Also are you staying at WP.com then? If you are then it'd be cheaper to register through WP.com as it makes no sense to pay $11/yr for domain registration and then $13 for WP.com mapping. So yes if you're staying at WP.com.

If you aren't staying at WP.com then you can register it elsewhere as there would be no need for you to pay $18/yr for a .com domain. However if you do plan to move back to WP.com in the future you can't transfer your domain to them so you'd then be paying $11 + $13.

I think you will have to set everything back up at your new domain, but I'm only 98% sure.

2. If you get your top level domain at wordpress.com, you'll still have to setup everything at GoDaddy.com. If you stay at WordPress.com everything will stay the same.

P.S. I'm not going to advertise anything here but why GoDaddy? they have incredibly bad reviews and are really not good for WordPress (slow, etc.). I just don't want a person to really waste money! Just Google around and you'll see. Mods can remove this if this comment is out of line, but I'm not advertising anything.

I am about to transfer my blog to a .com domain and I have two questions:

1. If I register the domain through godaddy.com and use an FTP server to transfer the blog, will I lose my 'oxygen' theme settings, such as header, widgets etc?

2. If yes, will this still be the case if I register the domain through wordpress.com?

Hope you guys can answer soonest :)

(and please let me know your thoughts and suggestions on my blog design)

Yesterday I was wondering why I couldn't find the Domain Administration section; however, I've since read in other support threads that in order to view this section, you must be logged in with the username that originally bought the domain name. I checked my users list, and lo and behold, I had stupidly used my old work email address to register the username that purchased my domain. It should go without saying that I no longer have access to this username (don't know the password) and the email address doesn't exist.

I can look my domain up on Whois and see that it's registered to me (albeit with my old home address and another email address I no longer have..... it's been a long year).

I'd love some support from WordPress on this one, but they're gone this week. Any ideas?

I did think about going self-hosted straight away as you suggest but I don't have the time right now to get my head around wordpress.org. I just need somewhere to park the domain for the time being, to avoid having to pay the huge renewal fee at the existing host, so wordpress.com will do fine for now. Once I get my head round what I want to do with the site in terms of what to sell and so on, I'll transfer it to .org.

Yes, you can go WordPress.com-hosted, and then go self-hosted (WordPress.org), all with the same domain name. Going self-hosted is the right thing to do if you are looking into e-Commerce (as there is no possibility of that here, not even with an upgrade).

As long as you have the same URL structure when going self-hosted, the transition should be seamless for your visitors and for search engines.

This being said, why not go self-hosted already? Just a thought.

The site’s not really operational and is a bit rubbish, so I want to shut it down and transfer the domain name to WordPress. I already have a WordPress.com blog so that would be nice and easy, no learning curve or expense.
However, I would like in due course to make it an e-commerce site. I realise I would need to use .org for that, so I’d like to know, having pointed the domain at WordPress.com, can I later divert it to .org? How difficult would this be and what money would be involved? I’m not very techie.
(By the way, am I right in thinking there is no e-commerce facility on .com or could I get one by paying extra?)

If your domain name has been registered less than 60 days it can't be transferred - that is an ICAN regulation to prevent fraud - you can however change where the name servers are pointed - that info should be at the link above -
