This morning around 10 or 11 am, the main background of my forever theme blog went transparent - not the custom background, but the center area behind menu, posts, widgets. I did nothing in the CSS to cause this, and I cannot find a CSS code to reverse it. Did anyone else have this problem?

Thanks!

I did not say you caused harm. I asked you not to encourage those who have WordPress.org blogs to return here byy answering their questions.

WordPress.com bloggeres pay for CSS Upgrades and all CSS editing is theme specific. Many themes here are adapted to run on this software.

Thank you for understanding my concerns. Given how many unanswered WordPress.com support questions there are http://en.forums.wordpress.com/view/no-replies and the number of unanswered CSS Forum thread there are http://en.forums.wordpress.com/forum/css-customization it's my opinion that the last thing we need is more WordPress.org bloggers posting for CSS editing help here.

Destinytips - you're welcome.

Timethief - thanks for your posts. The user had already been made aware that there was a separate forum for self hosted users twice in this thread. Additionally, the actual issue was not specific or relevant to hosting in any way. It was something that any user of WordPress could have experienced. Therefore, in this instance, I do not see any harm in the advice I offered.

I view this forum is a friendly, supportive environment for all lovers of WordPress. However, I understand your concerns and will take them on board for the future.

Hi destinytips. Looking at your blog, it seems you've found the solution to your problem by using the CSS opacity property.

The opacity property will work with most modern browsers. However, to make sure the background appears semi-transparent to users of older versions of Internet Explorer, I recommend that you add the following two extra lines of code (appearing below in bold):

#container {<br />
padding-bottom: 20px;<br />
background: #222;<br />
box-shadow: 0 0 10px #000;<br />
opacity: 0.8;<br />
<strong>zoom: 1;<br />
filter: alpha(opacity=50);</strong><br />

These two extra lines should ensure complete cross-browser compatibility for your site. :)

In the Pilcrow theme, the white color behind content is set using the "#wrapper" selector. You can remove that using this CSS:

#wrapper {
	background: inherit;
}

To add white background back to the header area, you could add something like this:

#header {
	background: #fff;
	padding: 4.7%;
	margin-left: -4.7%;
}

You can adjust the numbers as necessary or change out the "#header" selector to "#nav" or something else if you'd like. You should experiment with the examples above until it looks how you want.

Hi!

I'm building a simple blog (I have only a simple test version up) and I have a single change I want to make which (I believe) requires CSS customization.

I intend to buy the custom design feature, but I don't really have the time to learn CSS, so if someone who has the skills could give me the code, I would be super duper grateful.

What I want is for all elements except the header and the hover effect on the menu to be transparent, and all text color to remain in the default setting. Ie, no solid background colors whatsoever, only my chosen background image.

So I am designing a site for my friend for xmas and I am using the Sight theme.

I am not really understanding how custom menu's work and how to implement them well. For example on the About parent you can see that there is a bio and resume drop down but I can't make the About link stop working, ya know?

Also I would love to make that white block a little transparent. I know there's a way to do it through CSS but after reading the tutorials I need a little help.

Lastly, once I give it to him will it be hard to change the owner?

Thanks for any help and advice you can give!

Yes, the one reason is RGB.
The other reason is that images downsized by WP lose quality - see here:
http://wpbtips.wordpress.com/2010/01/16/image-quality/
Your "web_laurels" image is displayed at a width of 640px (the width of the page column in Structure) while the original is an impossible 7049px wide image. Same with the images on the other page (for instance, "jerusalem_laurels" is 3600px wide, displayed version 200px).
So, for best results make the images RGB, and downsize them to the desired displayed width before uploading them. And the right application for this kind of thing isn't Illustrator, it's Photoshop.
Still, the "web_laurels" image won't ever display satisfactorily at 640px: too much detail for that size. You should reconsider and maybe arrange the individual banners in two rows of three or three rows of two, so that they won't have to be downsized too much to fit the 640 of the theme.

Hi all,

I often use transparent pngs for graphics on my website callmekuchu.com. But I recently uploaded a new transparent png and it seems to be displaying strangely. You can see it here: http://callmekuchu.com/awards/ As you'll see, you can't really make out any of the detail or read anything. BUT if you click on the graphic (which is still hyperlinked to the image) you can see that it then displays properly. Does anyone have any idea what the problem could be?

I have a similar file on the home page: callmekuchu.com, and you can see it's displaying properly. Another example: you can see the difference between earlier pngs and a more recent one here: http://callmekuchu.com/screenings/ (The Jerusalem Film Festival laurel is displaying strangely, while the rest seem fine).

Could it be something to do with my export settings in Adobe Illustrator? I've tried a bunch of settings now, but might have missed something so any ideas would be helpful. Or could it be an RGB/CMYK thing? I've noticed WordPress doesn't seem to like CMYK...

Any and all advice or suggestions would be much appreciated!

Thanks!

Hi there,
You will need to go into the stylesheet for the theme and modify an element. This is it, and below what you need to make it look like:

.menu ul li {
    background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0.8);
    line-height: 15px;
    position: relative;
}

.menu ul li {
    line-height: 15px;
    position: relative;
}

The background color attribute is causing the problem.

Good luck!

Hi.

I have been playing around with the css on my new blog with some sucess thanks to loads of tips that others have posted here.

I have made the background to the site transparent and the header logo transparent by using a trnasparent png file.

If you look at my site the menu bar is not transparent to match the rest of the site? Is this possible to do?

http://biltarch.wordpress.com/

Thanks in advance!
