It's a mistake to try to stumble your way through without looking at the Support documents first. Go through http://learn.wordpress.com and when you have a specific question, use the search on the Support documents to find your answers, like what is a widget.

To get rid of Uncategorized, you need to create other categories, then edit the existing posts to give them other categories, so none of them are ONLY using "Uncategorized." Once that's done, you can change your default category to any of the ones you've created and Uncategorized will never appear again.

What is a "widget" and how do I open it ?

I think I will be finding a more simple site to use. WordPress is to hard to understand. All I want is a main page to put up a few blogs, cant work out how to get rid of the Uncategorized page and don't understand all the jargon people are saying on how to get rid of it.

Yes there is: you open the widget, enter the category ID number in the Exclude field, save. The ID number of the "Uncategorized" category is 1.

You can set a category as your default category so you won't get the "useless" uncategorized tag if you forget to choose another one:

Setting the Default Category

A default category (uncategorized) will be assigned to published posts if you don’t specify one. The default category can be changed under Settings -> Writing in your dashboard.

Dear glennagibson,

apologies, my brain is running slow, my own blog is having issues today too...

Ok I *think* you want to get rid of the main tag at the top of the page "Uncategorised"next to About, Recipes etc. yes?

I checked your posts, you haven't added ANY categories to them at all so first you need to choose some and add them (just click the " +Add new category" bit at the bottom of your category section).

Once you've named it something else "Fish", "Favourites", "Chowders" etc then just de-checkmark the "uncategorised" one... if you do that with all your posts so far then does the tag at the top disappear?

I'm not very tech savy but this would at least be my own first course of action...

Thanks Kiwidutch! The uncategorised category is the only one in the list that does not have a check box next to it. I tried to edit it but just get the message that it was not updated?

Dear glennagibson,

I'm not sure if I understand your question correctly but for me the "uncategorised" box is at the top of your Categories section.

To get rid of this as a tag on your current blog post simply click on the check mark that's in the little box next to the word "Uncategorised" and it will disappear (and click again if you change your mind and want it back etc)

You can do this with any topic in your Categories section, not just the uncategorised one ...

So my site is http://www.nicoleintermedia.com, and I have literally tried every solution. I created my own site template using artisteer and my own personal coding.

It's only on the homepage. I've tried finding the code in the .css, I've tried locating the specific instance with firebug, all to no avail. I just want them removed, not renamed. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You need to select a different category as your Default category before you can get rid of Uncategorized.

Following the import and conversion from tags to categories on our blog site, trustedinsight.wordpress.com, now all posts have the category Uncategorized as well as with the categories we want. As we cannot use plugins, I know there is no way to do a bulk edit, but is there a way, perhaps with WordPress's own support team, to drop the Uncategorized category from our posts?

That's the default category that automatically appears when you do not assign a category to posts and have not changed the default category to another one. http://en.support.wordpress.com/posts/categories/#setting-the-default-category The only way you can hide it is by purchasing a custom design upgrade. http://en.support.wordpress.com/custom-design/

I'm not advanced in wordpress. I have "Imbalanced2" theme instaled on my blog and use it as a portfolio. When I started, I had only a title of post under a thumbnail image on the main site. Then i tried how categories works and decided that i don't need them. The problem is that a word "uncategorized" appeared between every thumbnail image and title. Please, tell me how to disable it? I have found only some info that i need to have at least one category, but it doesn't solve the problem...
