As noted above the .ORG folks are where you will get the software you will probably be using - they also support it - your students will also need to get used to using the .ORG support documents for their software and modifying code and I assume Themes (done in PHP) -

I used to help in the .ORG forum and would refer people to some of the documents for similar things such as how to make a Post were better written here than over at .ORG - that was two years ago so maybe things have changed - but the how to make a Post would probably be something you would cover in class so might not make any difference

WP Multisite might be just the solution I required. Our objective is for students to access HTML source code within their imported blog running inside Multisite.

I teach multiple technologies (3D/animation, video/audio, etc.) in addition to web design, so I need a solution with a minimal learning curve.

Is Multisite more straight forward than "multiple installs?" I won't have time to deal with proprietary problems for each student's blog. Turning off each student's plug-ins sounds like a simple way to avoid potential problems.

I think you are confused, the $100 fee is for WordPress to move a blog to a self-hosted platform. Since WordPress.org software is free you can do it yourself for nothing - in fact it would be a learning experience for them.

You could even run WordPress.org on a machine on your local LAN, meaning you don't even have to buy a domain name or pay for hosting!

I want college freshmen in my Interactive Media Class to learn self-hosted WordPress. They've gone through 6 hours of Lynda.com's WordPress.com 2.7 Essential Training

but I need for students to have access to self-hosting without incurring the $100 fee.

I have a self-hosting license, but can't expect students to incur this additional cost on top of the course fee. Cloud hosting is not an option because students must be able to edit simple HTML within their WP Themes.

Has anyone dealt with a similar situation? Is there a way I can make my license available to students for experimentation only? I'm not too concerned about access to my user name password if I can temporarily share my information.

Hi Guys

My name is Nuno and I'm a student of Journalism in University of Coimbra. I'm here, today, representing my technical team to ask you from some help. We want to make a blog/site called Deontology Observatory.
We don't have any knowledge about html or css code and we are giving our first steps in the wordpress world. So, we have a lot of doubts and we'll be very thankful if you can help us.

First: At Home, what are the images inside a rectangle?

Second: How do we do to put our images, photos and texts like in the demo (http://imbalance2demo.wordpress.com/)? Is there any way to divide the page in two or three columns?

Third: At Home, is it possible to leave some fixed posts and vary others?

Fourth: How do we do to the images + text, inside any category, be just as like at the home page, lightning that red thing around them?

Best Regards.

Through interacting with our users, we aim to deliver the most relevant information to International/Foreign/Erasmus students that want to study here in the UK.

Hi everyone! I'm studying Journalism at University and for one of my modules I have to make an online blog, so I based mine around Film and TV... I've just put up reviews of The Woman in Black and The Muppets!

http://timwillers.wordpress.com/

Any views/likes/comments I get can increase the mark I get for this module, so I'd really appreciate if you checked it out and liked/commented an article or two!

I'd also love any feedback you might have about how to improve my writing style, or suggestions on articles to write... I'm thinking of doing a 'top 5 modern horror films' article next - any similar suggestions like that? :)

Thanks in advance!

It may only be Day Three in our little excursion, but Sauce Off has gotten an impressive start. Here are just a few things you can expect in the coming weeks:

1. A week from today we will introduce our new bloggers
2. We will feature an article from bowski477 of Aesthetically-Pleezin.com, chronicling her online success following graduation
3. College senior KB will update us on her hopes and fears as she prepares to enter her final year
4. We will visit several colleges to see what questions they have for Post Grads
5. Twice a week we will feature a new Post Grad with an internet presence (if you are interested in being featured, please email the link to your blog/website/web show/etc. to [email redacted])

And there will be plenty more. Remember, we're still looking for guest bloggers, and new articles. (other forms of media will also be considered). Some thing's we are interested in - recent grads (within the past two years) who are also parents/about to become parents, grads who have successfully navigated the job market, grads attenting grad school, grads engaged, grads who realized they want to do something different than what they obtained their degrees in, unsuccessful journey's through the job market, students who started college and for one reason or another dropped out, traveling grads, advice from professors and employers, etc.

All submissions must be directed to [email redacted]. They may be no longer than 650 words and must be accompanied by a brief (2-3 sentences) summary of the author. People who are not recent Post Grads can still submit articles, so long as material involves Post Grad life in one form or another. And please, don't be intimidated.

Don't Forget to check back daily for new articles! sauceoff.wordpress.com

Hello, I'm looking for some advice about using P2 or an alternative platform for a private blog for my students to keep the conversation from class going between face-to-face sessions.

I am thinking of using the P2 theme for two reasons. First, P2 can be configured as a private blog which is important because I want students to be able to explore their ideas as a community without worry about outside judgement or exposure. Second, P2 can be configured to send students email alerts for new posts.

Privacy:
None of my students have WordPress accounts yet, so I think I will have to have them each create a WP account so they can access the site, then add each one as an "author." Is there another platform that makes it easier to have security — that would allow students to log in, for instance, with an existing gmail account?

Alerts:
P2 currently allows users to subscribe to a blog and get notices of posts by email. This is great because students won't even need to sign in to yet another site to keep up with new posts. But: Alerts for new comments is not yet supported, so students cannot keep up with the conversation. Unless they sign in to the site they won't even know it is happening. These students are already required to use Desire2Learn (d2l), a learning management systems like Blackboard, so I'd be foolish to expect them to learn to navigate and monitor one more site.

I have read that alerts for comments "is coming," but I don't know when. Does anyone know of an alternative that already has these features integrated?

I hope developers will take note that there is great potential here for powerful software and that there is a need for this kind of product for educators and students.

I'm a junior at NYU, majoring in Film and Television Production, and beginning pre-production on my first short student film, which I'll be making this coming fall. "Salvage" is a short film following Lora and Craig, a young married couple who have just lost their daughter to complications stemming from cystic fibrosis. On the brink of losing their marriage too, they're visited by a mysterious, ethereal man, who helps to bring the hope and support they need.

I'm currently looking for support and fundraising to help make this project! To follow the progress of the film and donate, please visit my blog! Thanks :)

Hiya!

My blog deals with my experiences as a student in Grahamstown and Durban, South Africa. Originally from Italy, I see myself as both a local and an ex-pat.

In between creating crazy works at the Rhodes Theatre, reading dense English Literature, and learning to parallel park, I document my life and poetry on my blog, http://www.martyinmotion.wordpress.com

So please check it out! :)
