It's obviously not being used and denying someone else with a website and .com site linking a blogsite and my website together.

That's unfounded it then will not matter what the underlying .wordpress.com address is when you purchase domain mapping. Follow these instructions if you already have a domain that you registered elsewhere, and you want to map that domain to your blog. http://support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/map-existing-domain/

There is no expiration date on blogs unused or otherwise. Hi
I had to join up just to ask a question.
So this blog name will never be a blog cos I don't want this name! I will delete it once the question has been answered.
I want the name of a blog that has only been used 3 times and they were back in Aug 31st 2011 is this possible?
It's obviously not being used and denying someone else with a website and .com site linking a blogsite and my website together. If this is not possible I will look for another blog site with the name I want available.
Just giving you the option of having me.

If a blog hasn't been used, is there a way I can contact the person that registered it, to see if they might surrender it?

I'm working on a social research project and have tried to set up a blog reflecting the project name, but have found it's already been registered. I noticed that the person who set it up, back in 2007 made a single posting and it's remained untouched ever since. Is there any way that I or WordPress can ask the owner whether they'd consider transfering ownership.

As project isn't generating any money, there's no budget available to pay for it, but given that it's been dormant, it seemed worth asking. The url is thebigquestion.wordpress.com. Many thanks for your help.

WordPress.com is a business that makes money from upgrades so fairness does not enter the picture here. Providing a free blog with outstanding free features as well as free hosting is what's on offer as well as upgrades and you can take that or leave it.

I've been looking into about 5 different domain names and they are all unavailable - either deleted or opened 5 years ago and never used. Contact information for the owners is not available on their pages. It seems unfair that we cannot contact the owners through WordPress to request a transfer of the domain name they are no longer using.
I hope that this issue will be addressed again in the future to allow for easier contact between WordPress users.

WordPress.com does not become party to these sorts of things, and will not give out personal information such as email addresses for privacy reasons. If the site you are interested in has a contact page, use that to contact the owner and if it does not, leave a comment on the site and see if they will respond. If they do and are willing to transfer it to you, then have them follow this procedure: http://en.support.wordpress.com/moving-a-blog/#transferring-your-blog-to-another-user-or-account .

If they aren't willing, or they don't respond, I'm afraid that will be the end of it.

There is a blog url which is allegedly in use, however the user hasn't ever posted anything, and hasn't logged in for 5 years. The domain is beetles.wordpress.com Is there any way I can claim it instead? It would mean a lot to me. They haven't responded to my questions, and clearly have no intention of doing anything with it, whereas I really want it for a blog about Wittgenstein.

Thanks for the suggestions. I've tried contacting the blog owner but s/he hasn't replied. For all one knows, s/he has forgotten they have this blog, and no longer uses the provided email address.

As for the bottom two suggestions, I'll probably follow one of those routes.
