Is there a way to limit the amount of text the Upcoming Events widget pulls from the "Description" field of events from a Google calendar? I know I can change the number of events listed, but I'd like to reduce the amount of text associated with each event (so i can list more events in the same space).

Thank you.

Hi there,

I'm working on a new WordPress site for a school and we're trying to connect our events calendar on Google to our Upcoming Events widget. Everything is working fine except for all day events which are showing the wrong date. For example, we list that the school is closed 2/18/2013 as an all day event in the calendar, but on the site it's showing up as 2/17/2013.

I think the widget code that imports the event is reading the start date as a UTC start date, then applying the time zone adjustment for the calendar (which is set to EST just like the blog is, America/New_York to be precise).

The ICS file doesn't include a time zone in the start & end date for all day events, so that's why I think this bug is showing up in the widget.

Hope that helps.

I think I can work around this by adding a start and end time, but that just looks odd for a "School is closed today" sort of entry.

Adding this thread per instructions on the other thread I found where people were discussing other time discrepancies.

Sujal

Alright, time to get methodical.

This is my current repo.

1) Create public Google calendar
2) Add some public events, recurring weekly.
3)Following the steps in http://en.support.wordpress.com/widgets/upcoming-events/, add an Upcoming Events widget to your sidebar and populate it with the .ics link.
4)Leave to sit for a week.

Expected behaviour:
Upcoming events should show up as time elapses, and old ones disappear.

Observed behaviour:
The widget is initially populated with upcoming events correctly, and disappear after their scheduled time. However, they are not replaced with the subsequent recurrences. Instead, "No upcoming events" is displayed. Querying the Google calendar separately still shows the events correctly.

I'm not sure what I've done wrong here - both the widget and shortcode for "Upcoming Events" have stopped displaying anything except "No upcoming events". I've double checked that both the calendar and the (recurring) events are public, and I've checked the iCalendar URL is correct.

They both worked when I set them up originally, albeit with incorrect time zones, and I haven't touched them since, so I'm not sure there's much more detail I can give.

On http://notslangcath.wordpress.com/schedule/ you can see the Google styled embedded one works fine, but above it is an Upcoming Events shortcode drawing from the same calendar. It used to display a table of events, but now it just says "No upcoming events". The same text is shown in the widget at the side.

The calendar itself can be viewed at https://www.google.com/calendar/embed?src=0bf7degac4km43sb0g4ha63uuo%40group.calendar.google.com&ctz=America/Los_Angeles

Any advice welcomed.

I've just noticed the new Upcoming Events widget and shortcode, and I think it's a great idea, however, I have two questions:

1. The Description field appears to be limited to 62 characters, whether I use the widget in my sidebar or the shortcode on a page. My descriptions aren't very large, so I don't know why they need to be truncated. Very inconvenient.

2. Even with "all" events selected, only one event is being displayed. Does it only go so far into the future to display events? To me, selecting "All" events should show all events, or selecting 10 should show me the next 10 events, regardless of how far into the future they go. If that assumption is incorrect, I think it should be documented in the support page for the widget.

I have a private blog that I use to test new widgets before I post them to my real blog, so I can't show you what I mean. I am using the Sight theme and Firefox browser.

Does anyone know how to add upcoming events to ordinary http://blogname.wordpress.com blogs?

Upcoming at Yahoo have a nice badge but it relies on posting code and I understand wordpress doesn't allow that.

I've googled for ideas and I seem to get links to plugins for SELF-HOSTED blogs only.

Is it possible to feed in upcoming events, or do we need to cut-and-paste one-by-one???

Many thanks

I see your point about the text widget... I'm using about 4 and 9 is quite a lot, but if you like dividing your sidebar into different sections, I can see how you'd go through the 9 quite quickly. You can separate some of your content by using
<br>
, particularly if it's just clusters of images, but if you're using them for your blogroll. etc, that wouldn't work. Maybe having an option to upgrade to more widgets would be useful (like we can purchase an upgrade to the space allowance)?

As for contacting support, it can be a problem sometimes; I live in Australia, so it doesn't usually open here until about midnight. On the whole I haven't had many problems with WP, though, so I don't mind staying up late occasionally to send a support message. And a lot of the other problems are handled in the forums, which staff do monitor as well. So I don't think there's a way round it, or at least not until Automattic expands; and if they do, it might not be the same service we have now. If you can't get through to support, maybe you could start a new thread in the ideas forum; that might be the next best thing.
