kardotim, thanks for your answer too. And it seems I spoke too soon. Before I deleted the visibility settings as danielisreading suggested, the widget wouldn't show on my blog on any browser. Now that I deleted the settings, my blog shows in its sidebar that the widget is there, but it's like it isn't loading properly. This happens both on Firefox (which I'm using now) and my Android phone. Can you guys make any sense out of that?

I can't believe it. As soon as I deleted the Visibility settings, it worked. It never occured to me that they could be deleted... How silly of me. Thank you very much indeed for your help!! :)

Interesting, I looked on Firefox on my computer, and now again on my Android phone, but it isn't showing, yet I've seen it on other WordPress.com blogs.

I was able to reproduce the issue. I've reported this issue to our developers and I'll let you know once it's fixed.

Well, to get it to show on all pages/posts/front page you don't need any visibility 'rules'. So you can delete those if you wish. If that doesn't fix it we'll need staff assistance, unless someone else had any ideas.

Thanks for answering. It does show on the widget page Sidebar normally and everything seems to be in order - it just doesn't display on the actual blog. I'm a little puzzled by the visibility settings in general though. I've tried pretty much every combination but I'm not making any sense out of the visibility options. Right now I've got it on Show if Category is All category page (to no avail). Any idea what's going on?

Hmm that is interesting, did you make sure you pressed save after you put your ID in? Did you perhaps change the visibility settings of the widget? Is the widget showing in Sidebar 1 on your widget page?

I've added the GoodReads widget onto Sidebar 1 (following the intructions) but it doesn't show on my blog. The theme I'm using is Oulipo, perhaps the widget doesn't work on this specific theme? If you know anything about this glitch I'd love to know. Cheers!

I came across a strange quirk when testing out the new visibility feature for widgets.

If you open Design → Widgets, open one of the existing widgets, click the 'Visibility' button and close the widget afterwards, it stays in a weird spot slightly moved to the left. Made a screenshot.

This can only be reverted either by reloading the page or opening and closing the widget one more time.

It's not odd considering the timeframe here so I removed tha tag for Staff. After you make the domain mapping purchase here > Dashboard > Store > My Upgrades and do the set up it can take between 24 - 72 hours for domain name propagation to take place throughout the internet. It's not uncommon for your own ISP to be last to flush their DNS caches. Try clearing your browser’s cache:

You can view the DNS changes here > http://www.whatsmydns.net/ What's important during that stage is to be patient.

My WordPress hosted blog crimstarnetwork.com keeps disappearing. I get a "Safari can't open the page http://crimstarnetwork.com because Safari can't find the server http://crimstarnetwork.com". According to WordPress the URL is active but I can only access the address intermittently. I can access the dashboard ok, but not the blog itself. I have other WordPress hosted blogs from the same account and all are these are visible and trouble free. Your assistance would be appreciated.

Right: no automated way to do this.
The only way would be to remove the Recent posts widget, create a custom menu in Appearance > Menus, add the posts you want, add a Custom Menu widget to your sidebar, make it display the custom menu you created, and update the menu manually each time you publish a regular post.

What you're missing is that the visibility settings don't determine what will show in the widget, they determine whether the widget will show on a certain page: when you select Hide/Brief, you say that the widget won't show when you view that category page. Check for yourself:

I recently adopted a new theme on my wordpress.com blog (http://akisaokay.wordpress.com) to allow for multiple post formats, and now would like only for Standard format posts to be included in my Recent Posts sidebar widget. While there's no format selection option, It looks like the widget allows for exclusion based on category, so I created a category for non-Standard posts ("Brief") and set the widget to hide posts in that category. And yet, they persist in showing up. When I tried the opposite approach and set it to show posts in every other category, the widget disappeared from the sidebar altogether.

What am I missing here? Any other suggestions?
