This makes it difficult to know if I've formatted things properly based on looking at the visual tab alone. Also, the text in the visual tab is appearing all the way to the left, with tons of blank space on the right. Any suggestions? Is this because I'm inserting text using the MS Word icon and copying from a Word doc?

For a WordPress.org setup with visual editor troubles, the best thing to do would be to load up a browser tools such as Firebug for Firefox, try to catch an error on the page when you see editor problems happening, and then post the details to the volunteer-based WordPress.org support forum. Giving more specific error details in your case, may really help. You should also mention if you have any plugins installed that affect the visual editor or if you have made any modifications to the visual editor in your copy of WordPress.

I think the visual editor should be working for you in IE9. To confirm, did you say the problem with the visual editor not working only happens with the latest post on your blog? Could you provide a link to that post please?

I've done this several times, so it must be gleaming in there.
The problem isn't occurring with all posts, just my latest one. The next one in the list appears fine.
If I access my blog from Google Chrome, it works - but I prefer to work from IE9 with Google as the browser (if that makes sense). Working from Google Chrome doesn't give you a full screen to see your text when typing in.

s there any improvement if you temporarily switch the language to English at Settings -> General in your Dashboard?

In terms of what? Of getting rid of the problem (visual tab not working), or of helping you analyzing the pictures I sent?
