Also know that even if you fail to verify the blog it doesn't matter as the content will be indexed anyway, provided the blog visibility is public.

I've done this before but for my new site it isn't working. I've followed all instructions to the letter & Google is "unable to verify" the site.
From webmaster tools I chose - Add a meta tag to your site's home page.
I've pasted that in my wordpress/tools/Google webmaster tools & saved.
Gone back to Google webmaster & clicked verify. Not working.
I've also tried to find my homepage to insert the html code ...any fixes please

Even if you do not verify the blog the content will be indexed by search engines so don't feel panicky about this please. Also note it takes weeks of publishing unique content that cannot be found elsewhere on the interment for Bing and Google to index your content. Thanks so much for checking on that! We have had some experiences where users can NOT ultimately get site verification despite doing everything correctly - it doesn't affect whether Google properly indexes your site, but let's cross that bridge when we come to it.

Can you verify what URL you are using with Google? We know that one common misconception is that you should type in http://www.yourblogname.wordpress.com - but the "www" part is not needed.
