I found that the answer is Edit your index file and replace the_content with the_excerpt. Stepping_Into_Template_Tags

The tutorial and customizations you mentioned (such as adding a flash banner) are things you can do with a WordPress.org setup because it gives you complete control over the code. It sounds like that would be the best solution for you if you want to get in and tinker with the code.
