I'm considering migrating my self-hosted blog site (http://ericscouten.com) over to WP.com. I've tried several times to import WXR files generated by the self-hosted blog site. Each time the posts come through just fine, but none of the pages are imported. I've looked at the WXR file and it appears to contain valid content for the pages, so it seems like the problem is on the WP.com side. Am I missing something?

FWIW the self-hosted blog is running WP 3.5.1.

I have a large WXR dump (15M) which consists of 602 posts, 8863 comments and 1967 images.

I have performed a simple experienment, by creating 3 blogs in wordpress.com to test the importing feature.

Result:

Blog A: 602 posts, 8863 comments, 993 images
Blog B: 602 posts, 8863 comments, 858 images
Blog C: 602 posts, 8863 comments, 900 images

As you can see, posts and comments are fine, but the number of images imported seem to be random (they are from the same WXR file) and around 50% of them are missed.

Are there any limitation on migrating image during import from WXR?
(I can provide the WXR file if you want to test)

And is there a limit to the total size of a WordPress.com blog?

Probably some limit to the number of servers in the world or something like that - the only space "limit" is the 3GB of media (pictures, uploaded files etc.) for no charge - if you fill that up you can purchase an upgrade for more space - the good news is that text is free - yes you can write all you want and there is no limit to your writing

And is there a limit to the total size of a WordPress.com blog? Hope I can find this out quickly, because if I don't act, my hosting service is going to renew me automatically in the next few days. Thanks.

hello,

I want to import a custom site to wordpress. I made an export function to produce a WXR file like this http://ipggi.wordpress.com/2011/03/16/the-wordpress-extended-rss-wxr-exportimport-xml-document-format-decoded-and-explained/

I don't know if the format in the above page is outdated but could find a specification for WXR.

For example I import a WXR file in a newly installed wordpress blog but categories don't show.

And another thing is the attachaments. How can I import them?

I've been using my blog with wordpress system on a private website for several years, and recently I decided to give up that domain and move it to wordpress.com. I downloaded the posts from my old blog (it's a .xml file) but can't upload it successfully into my blog on wordpress.com: after I chose the file and uploaded, it says: "This does not appear to be a WXR file, missing/invalid WXR version number"

I think I've done the downloading correctly, so I don't know what's missing. The problem is that the domain I bought is already gone, and my old blog doesn't exit anymore, so I can't go back and download again. If there's no solution to my problem, it means my around a hundred of posts for almost ten years would be gone forever, and that'll be a catastrophe for me.

I do need help on this, for I really want to take my posts and put them back to my blog. Or, is there any way that I can transfer my .xml file into a wxr one?I really appreciate if anybody can help, thanks!

Hi! I have this new .wordpress.com page now. In the past i used to use .info domain with personal host. Now since I didn't paid for domain anymore i want to move here with all my database, archive and stuff. So the problem is i can't import my database. I tried to log on my host which redirected me to phpmyadmin page and from there i exported a .xml of my data. Then in here after i tried to import the data it says: "Sorry, This does not appear to be a WXR file, missing/invalid WXR version number". I also tried to log on name.info/wp-admin but it redirects me to the old expired .info domain (name.info/wp-admin). So i'm a little confused. Suggestions? I don't wanna lose my database

There is no FTP access to free hosted WordPress.COM blogs and we cannot install individual plugins or any themes into them. The themes and plugins found on the internet are for wordpress.ORG installs which run on different software.

On free hosted wordpress.COM blogs we can only use the themes which have been coded to run on this multi-user software and made available to us here. > Appearance > Themes and no others.
If you wish to have complete control over a blog, the ability to upload themes and plugins, and to edit themes and templates then your option is to hire a web host and get a free software install from WordPress.ORG and self host it.
