Also note that WordPress.com is the top level domain (TLD) and all .wordpress.com blogs are sub-domains. If you purchase a domain name in a domain mapping upgrade then you can map from any .wordpress.com sub-domain URL to your domain. It doesn't matter at all which .wordpress.com sub-domain URL you are mapping from because only you can see the sub-domain URLs on the Admin side of the blog. What your visitors will see is the domain URL.

Other than contacting them, there is nothing you can do. It's not your domain unless the current owner says it is okay for you to have it.
