Believe me when I say that I know the Gallery feature is not straightforward, but If you want to rant about it, do it on your blog and advertise it on social networking sites. Dumping rants on legitimate requests for assistance in the support forum will only get you marked as a spammer.

Submitted to Support recently:
I have been having problems with the WordPress Gallery in the media
selector application for some times now and from what I have seen
online, a lot of other people have too. So now I am going to tell you
what I think. The support information for the Gallery feature is not
accurate or helpfull. It does not appear to be possible or practical
to exclude or include certain images from the Gallery and if it can be
done, Support doesn't make it clear how to find the correct image id
descriptors for the 'exclude' command. In any case, it should be
obvious by now to the Support team, that your Gallery feature is not
an enjoyable WordPress feature. I am reluctant to try other web based
galleries such as Cinecopa with WordPress, simply because I think that
the Gallery feature should work better from within the WordPress
website environment. So that's it. Take it or leave it, but if it's
leave it, I will be discussing the issue with other WordPress users.

It seems that dtrachtman's current website is no longer hosted by WordPress.com so whatever he has done on his site is no longer relevant for anyone who is.

However, you can achieve the same effect using only Pages on your site and the Gallery feature. http://en.support.wordpress.com/images/gallery/

In order to disallow commenting on the Gallery Image Carousel, you would have to turn off commenting site wide before you upload even a single picture. http://en.support.wordpress.com/enable-disable-comments/

You may also want to look at some of the photocentric Themes, especially the Premium themes. http://theme.wordpress.com/themes/subjects/photography/

dtrachtman, I had a look at your site and it looks like you got everything sorted because the layout is gorgeous.
I am trying to do something similar for a portion of my own travel blog, and I like the way you have sorted your albums into different pages, each with a thumbnail link on the main page.
May I enquire as to the method that you used for the gallery pages? If it is based on wordpress.com applications, you're speaking my language. If it is wordpress.org-based or applications beyond, an explanation is not necessary as it would be beyond my abilities.

Categories and Archives cannot be assigned to Pages. They can only be assigned to Posts. As you are going to create a page based structure you may want to examine the SEO ramifications of doing that. Page structured blogs have a very difficult time:
1. securing traffic;
2. securing comments;
3. securing backlinks;
4. achieving authority in their niche;
5. achieving Google PageRank.

Thanks, but I need to turn off more than comments. I need to turn off, "Categories", "Archives", "Meta" etc. on all pages. So I guess I need to upgrade and try to figure out where in the CSS I would find all that.

When you publish a post or a page with a gallery, the so-called "attachment pages" you get when clicking on each thumbnail adopt your default Settings, not the options you select in the post or page editor.

Whatever you change in your Settings will apply to posts or pages you create after you've made that change: it won't affect already created posts or pages.
So the only way to have gallery attachment pages with no comment field is to disable commenting in Settings>Discussion before creating gallery posts or pages, (and override it in the Discussion module of the post/page editor for posts/pages in which you do want to allow commenting).

This page > Settings > Discussion
Discussion settings is where you set up defaults for comments.
We can also override the default settings and enable or disable future comments on any post or page.

Turning those off is not possible. However, you can hide them if you purchase an annually renewable custom design upgrade and do the required CSS editing.

I am trying to make a site that only shows pages with photo galleries. Because it is not a blog, there would be no posts or comments or any of that, so I need to deactivate, "Categories", "Archives", "Meta" etc.
I cant figure out how to turn off those things. Is it possible? thanks
