I think I have got the idea of pages, which is exactly how I hoped they would work.

Now I just need to work out how to modify the theme layout.

Please see my reply to timslists and understand that strictly speaking a blog is a website. The main difference between a blog structure and website structure is the communication style. Blogs are post based structures that provide for and encourage interactive communication. Websites are page based structures that operate as a one-way noticeboards.

Yes, of course yolu can create a page based site if you wish. You can create static pages, create a custom menu and add the pages to it if you wish. Or you can have a static front page.

Pages are static and are for content that rarely changes. They sit outside of the blog structure and you cannot post to multiple pages in any blog. There is only one main page for posts in a blog and all posts will display on the main blog page. There is no way to exclude posts from the main posts (blog) page.

The front page of the blog by default will display your posts (not pages) in reverse chronological order, with the most recently published post on top. If you do not want all the posts to show on the front page, then you can create a static front page "Welcome" for your site and a “Blog” page for posts.

Which do you choose? It’s one or the other.

If you choose Choice 1 static front page then you have to create two pages as I said above. After you do that you go to > Settings > Reading and make the designation change and click “save changes”.

I need to know this too. I'd like a simple website, but I'm not ready to maintain a blog.

I would like to create a "pages only" site, that relied on the Search Box to find the pages relevant to any particular search. The search results would be minimal, with just the title of each page.

I like the look of theme "Twenty Eleven", because it is single column and has the search in the header section.
I will not need the pages list part,

I would just want to display the about page on the home page.

Is the above possible and could anyone advise on the best way to achieve my 'wants'.
