One way to preserve the namespace is to use your blog name as the root name and add to that:

igx89.wordpress.com
igx891.wordpress.com
igx892.wordpress.com
igx893.wordpress.com .. you get the idea. Not perfect but it works...

But, I can't figure out how to do so without being forced to create blogs for them too; I don't want them to have their own blogs, it just makes things messier (and greatly restricts the set of usernames to chose from). Is that possible?
