I have recently gone back from WordPress.org (self hosted WordPress software) to WordPress.com (http://marcusspeh.com), after self hosting for years. In all this time I've had Google analytics and I very rarely apart from the ego boost, did anything with that wealth of data. In my view, WordPress is well advised to stick with their decision, and I don't think it's bad marketing at all: folks who have commercial interests have no reason not to self host—the degrees of freedom available (and the work to be done accordingly) are simply immeasurably higher. In order to make the step from SiteMeter, StatCounter and other small-scale data aggregators traffic to the behemoth Google, you'll need to want to invest a lot more time than the average blogger is willing to do. And every minute that you poke through the data haystack is a minute that you're not spending on creating content: which arguably is why people come to you at all. And of lecture!

There are Tumblr themes that allow you to just add the tracking code, and then the actual javascript isn't handled by the end user. Is it possible wp.com could slip in similar functionality?

I haven't been able to transfer from wp.com to my own hosted install yet because my theme here isn't available for hosted installs. But simple things like this are really making the service a pain to use.

Go to http://sitemeter.com and follow the very easy steps to making an account... it'll give you some more numbers and stats to stare at. If you need more, upgrade to a paid account and there are literally dozens more stats and graphs you can stare at -- Site Meter easily has as many stats and graphs as Google does that you can stare at.

If you need even more numbers to stare at, try http://getclicky.com/ and http://www.quantcast.com/ which should give you enough numbers to stare at that you'll never have time to blog ever again. Either WordPress should put more info on their Stats page or allow us to use Google Analytics on our blogs.

yup i can tell i made a big mistake using wordpress.com instead of .org, it’s so limiting. I tried to switch to .org, got the hosting all setup, used the export tool for all my .com blog posts and then the import tool failed every time on the .org side pulling in the data. I switched from blogger to wordpress.com, kinda regretting it.

I am a programmer and web developer and can tell you that it would be EXTREMELY easy for WordPress.com to add support for google analytics, even without giving users the ability to edit templates, and even with the broad variety of 3rd party themes.

All they have to do is replace the "</body>" endtag with the analytics code followed by "</body>" in any theme at publication time. WordPress.com can supply the code themselves, as sites such as RedBubble.com do, requiring only that the user enter the google analytics ID into a web form.

I'm all of a sudden having second thought about launching with WordPress.com. Dang it. More work to do.
