If FF works better for you, that's good to know. Try Safari again after their next version to see if they've made it WP.com compatible.

Files are between 1-7mb

That is tremendously huge and is probably choking the system.

Try a .jpg that's 100K or less and see if it works.

i have tried multiple formats jpeg, tif, psd etc and all have the same issue.
Files are between 1-7mb

Any ideas?
