Right, thanks everyone. Admittedly I was hot under the collar when I was surprised by the ads today, so my apologies for a bit of hyperbole.

I'm grateful for WordPress, I wouldn't be able to have a professional-looking site, given my budget right now, otherwise.

One should always read the ToS, of course, but a more realistic, and up front way to alert me WordPress would be placing advertising on my site would be appreciated.

To off-set the costs of providing free hosting to millions of bloggers, WordPress.com has been running advertising on our free hosted blogs since 2006. Many bloggers do not know this because despite the fact they ticked the box required to get a free blog, they did not read the ToS. Many also do not read the advertising entry in the support documents after registering their username and blog(s). Also note that as the ads do not display to us when we are logged in, and as many use browsers with ad blockers when logged out, they may not realize they are there at all.

All of WordPress.com ads are family-friendly. If you feel an ad is inappropriate please take a screenshot of it, upload it via Media -> Add New to your Media Library. Then return to this thread to post the file name to let Staff them know it's there for them to view.

Lastly, note to eliminate all advertising on our free hosted WordPress.com blogs we can purchase an annually renewable No-Ads upgrade.

Free features are not free if I'm required to run your ads on my site. That means I'm paying for the privilege. I'd have agreed to pay the $30 had I known up front, but running your ads is not something I'd have agreed to if I'd known in advance.

WordPress is not actually "free" if I have to display your ads on my site, is it? I'll be paying your $30 updgrade to keep this pestilence at bay, but I'd really have appreciated you being up front about my needing to carry your ads, rather than being surprised by them today, and horrified to think my potential readers might already have been assailed by your ads.

I've been satisfied with the system, and think you offer a great service. The underhanded way it appears you handle sneaking in the ads, however, really pissed me off.
