Thanks for all your help - it's clearer now. I just need to figure out how I would compensate my guest bloggers when I map my domain to wordpress and launch my biz fully.

I'll be back if something else pops up.
Thanks again

No blogger initiated advertising is allowed on free hosted WordPress.com blogs and there is no upgrade you can purchase that changes that. Please read this http://en.support.wordpress.com/advertising/

You will need to hire a web host and set up your own self hosted WordPress.org install for that. WordPress.com vs. WordPress.org: The Differences http://support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

Is self hosting the same as upgrading

No. Self-hosting mean paying a web hosting service and installing and maintaining software such as wordpress yourself. There are hundreds of web hosting companies out there with a wide variety of rates.

Can I get my own sponsors/advertisers

Not on any site hosted on wordpress.com unless you upgrade to at least the Enterprise level which starts at $500/mo.

Hi I wanted to know this as well - I'm still pretty new and still reading through the rules. Started a 'fun blog' last year - and now I am doing it for my business.
Is self hosting the same as upgrading - which would use my own domain name and drop the .wordpress?

Self hosting is the only way. No user-initiated advertising is permitted here including banners, etc.

Hi there,

I am investigating advertising on my blog which is mostly of interest in one country to an ABC-type audience.

There are two types of advertising I would like to run.

(1) Jobs, property, cars, discounts offers where I can create a new tab and enter the advertisement details as a listing. Advertisers would pay me for each listing.

(2) Banner-type sponsorship advertising, where a company would buy a surround to the scree with their brand and ad.

I have studied the advertising sections on WP.

I think my only option is to buy a domain (eg myblog.org) and buy a hosting package that includes support for WP, transfer the blog to the new website and make the changes on what would then be my own hosted blog.

Sorry to bother you, but my question is, is my understanding correct and is this the only option - your VIP packages are way too expensive for me at this point and WP advertising is a bit of a distraction for the audience. I can't exactly see any prohibition on listing ads or banner type ads on WP's terms, but I might be missing that.

Many thanks for any guidance or suggestions
