The audio player needs the URL of an mp3, so the mp3 must be uploaded somewhere. That somewhere can be your blog, but it doesn't have to be your blog: you can upload your mp3s in a free file-hosting site that gives direct URLs. Suggested sites: Fileden and Kiwi6.

What you can upload and what works in a post aren't the same. For instance, you can upload a PDF or a Word doc but you can't insert them in a post, you can only link to them so that others can open them or download them. Same way, if you have the Space Upgrade you can upload m4a files, but the audio player can process mp3 files only: that's a limitation of the current WP audio player. (And the WP Support doc on audio is confusing, to put it mildly. Are you aware of the fact that you don't even need the Space Upgrade to insert audio?)

When you add media, one of the allowed file types is m4a. I don't understand why the audio player doesn't work with an allowed file type.

Your file will never work because it's an mp4: the audio player works with mp3s only.

I can see it in Gallery, and clicked "None" under Link UR before inserting it in the post. It never gets past "buffering". I bought the Space Upgrade, and followed the directions, but it won't play, at least in Draft-Preview mode.
