On the Autosave page, we have a screenshot that shows what you are supposed to see when autosave is functioning correctly. Do you not see the "Draft saved at..." on your edit box, like in the screenshot? You are correct that there is no way to change the auto-save interval.

To save while you are writing, you can click on "Save Draft".

Another person wrote something about being able to set the interval on the auto-save feature. Can't find such a thing.
