When we register a username account ata WordPress.com all we provide is an email address and it becomes our unique identifier.

I'm afraid this is strictlybetween you and the person you hired. That person must add you as an official user of the blog and designate you as an Admin and transfer the blog to your WordPress.com username account using this process.
