You are correct that some themes show excerpts and some show full posts on the home/front page. The Something Fishy theme does show full posts, but you can use the "More" tag to abbreviate the display there. See here: http://en.support.wordpress.com/splitting-content/more-tag/

Prefer to have a few entries shown in summary on a page. Cheers.
