@empathologicalism
Hooray! Now you've got it. There is no global setting to create truncated post entries on the front page of our blogs. The Twenty Eleven theme is not designed to display only post excerpts like Fresh and Clean and Inuit Types are so you do need to insert the more tag into your posts.
Best wishes with your blog.

What's "checked"? The setting on this page > Settings > Reading is for display ing either the full text or a summary in the RSS feed for posts only. To truncate the display of every post on the front page of the blog you must insert the more tag into every post. http://en.support.wordpress.com/splitting-content/more-tag/

@gabrielstjohn
There is once caveat when splitting the content using the Add More tag: it can slow down your main page loading times and you have to consider those that are on slower internet connection - and there is still a large percentage that are!

That's wrong. Inserting "the more tag" reduces page loading time.

@kamertunesblog There is once caveat when splitting the content using the Add More tag: it can slow down your main page loading times and you have to consider those that are on slower internet connection - and there is still a large percentage that are! Secondly, search engines consider page loading times when calculating a site's search engine ranking and slow loading pages can cause your site to appear much further down in search results.

The Fresh and Clean theme is designed to display excerpts only on the front page and there is a workaround you can use to override that. The theme has an active excerpt box below the editor. You compose your whole post first but before you publish it you switch to the HTML editor, copy the code, paste it into the Excerpt box, and then publish the post. http://en.support.wordpress.com/splitting-content/excerpts/#creating-excerpts

Thanks, Raincoaster. I've been using the same theme since I started my blog in March 2011, so I hadn't thought about updating that. Next week I was already planning on taking some time to update my existing posts with music & video files, so I will also look into changing my theme at the same time. Your help is much appreciated.

Timethief...I forgot to thank you last week for your quick reply. It was very helpful, and I will be using that feature on my blog soon. It's a little disappointing that I need to add the "more tag" to each post instead of making a sweeping change across all posts, but I've only got about 65 posts to update so it shouldn't take a lot of time. I appreciate your input.

How do I change my home page to include summaries of each post instead of full posts? Right now my home page shows my most recent post in its entirety, followed by the preceding post in its entirety, and so on. I've seen WordPress blogs that include a paragraph of each post, and readers can click on them to read the full posts. Optimally, I'd like my home page to show the most recent post in its entirety followed by summaries of prior posts. I've tried adjusting some settings but so far I've been unable to make this change. Please let me know if it's possible and, if so, how it's done? Thank you.
