1) Yes, this is one way to do it.
2) No, that wouldn't be safe and secure for them, although it's possible to do
3) the best way is to tell them to register for an account at wordpress.com (no blog, just the account) and then Invite them by username.

Thank you! I would never have found the option in 'Reading' if you hadn't told me.
If you invite folk, do you just put in their email addresses, separated by commas?
Can you set up a WordPress.com account on their behalf (and then give them their username/password for it)?

Setting a blog to private is built in at WordPress.COM

Dashboard >> Settings >> Reading >> I would like my site to be private, visible only to users I choose

Remember to save changes

You can invite as many people as you want - just do it 10 people at a time - they will need to open a WordPress.COM account - but they don't need a blog

I am new to wordpress and want to find out if it is possible to have a wordpress.com blog that can be set to private for all group members I want to invite? The brief research I've done on this suggests that it is only possible with wordpress.org and then you hav eto download a separate plug-in. Is this right?
Thanks.
